European Heritage Days

A very special insight into monuments, churches, special locations

With European Heritage Days taking place yesterday, many special locations were opened for the public in Germany, as well. Here, this is called "Tag des Offenen Denkmals".

There's a very special location close to the place where I live. It is called "Brückkanal" and is part of a big canal that was built around 1825 - 1845. The "Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal" was built as a transportation route and a connection of the rivers Donau (Danube) and Main.
Originally, the canal was about 173 km long, starting in Kehlheim, ending in Bamberg. Since it was very uneconomic, the canal was given up in the 1950s. Since 1973, it has been under monument protection. Only a few kilometers of the waterway are still navigable today.

Yesterday, the "Brückkanal" was opened. It is a massive and very big bridge leading the water of the canal over a small river called "Schwarzach".
Normally, you do not have access to the inside of the bridge, so a few friends and I walked over there and I took a few pics:

the river Schwarzach, pictures taken standing on the bridge

the bridge

the canal

going down to the entrance of the bridge - normally, the stairs are inaccessible

inside the bridge - it felt as if we had been beamed into a church suddenly

Close to this spot is a "Biergarten", a lovely spot in the middle of the woods, where you can have a beer or two and eat some German specialties (like Schweinebraten or the famous "Schäuferla" - the Franconian national dish made of pork shoulder).
I can only recommend stopping by if you're visiting the region of Nürnberg. Shoot me a message on steemit.chat if you ever plan to go there, I'd be happy to give you further info.
