First I Tried to Go to Mount Hood, and Shit Went Wrong. Then I Tried to Go to the Coast...

in travel •  7 years ago

Remember when I tried to go to Mount Hood, but it happened to be on the day that an uncommonly violent snowstorm occurred? So we had to turn back when the entry to the lodge was within sight. One of those times when life kicks you in the nards so hard, one of them goes up your throat and you spit it out, all covered in blood.

Well life wasn't done with me it seems, it had to go after the other nard too. I took an impulsive trip out to the Oregon coast with @amandarichards today, assuming when we arrived that the only electric car charger in town would be working. But it wasn't.

The only electric car charger in town was not working. I mean, I have the gas range extender so it's not the end of the world. But what the fuck would I do if I had a battery only EV without a ChaDeMo socket? (There was one ChaDeMo and one J1772 socket. The CHaDeMo worked, the J1772 didn't.)

It was an Aerovironment charging station, not Blink or Chargepoint, so I didn't have the card for it. I could apparently pay through the Plugshare app except my phone was dead. I charged it from a power bank long enough to get it turned back on, so I could pay through the app.

...Only to discover that the app showed the J1772 station as "not available". Well fuck my tender, unassuming asshole. It's really going to be like that, is it? This was after I drove around, lost, because the transit center where the charging station was located wouldn't show up on my car's GPS.

I couldn't use my phone to find it either as it was dead. When you're just barely in range of a tower, often your phone boosts it's own signal to compensate, but drains battery like mad in the process. Mine went down from 14% to 0% in the span of like 5 minutes.

Anyway I stopped to ask for directions and was able, by that time honored low tech method, to find the charging station. But by now, you know that wasn't the end of my troubles. I was fucking pissed. What would somebody with an 80 mile range all electric car do in my shoes?

What if they brought their wife and kids? What would their options be? Hunker down for a week waiting for the station to be repaired? Pay for a tow truck, 72 miles back to Portland? It's not like it's a difficult problem to solve either. If they just had 3 or 4 J1772 stations, then even if one or two break, there's still the others.

It's called redundancy, Aerovironment, you flaming dumpster of a company. Have you heard of it? Blink has out of order chargers all the time but they also have multiple chargers per location for exactly this reason. I shot them an email to complain, mostly to make myself feel better.

On the upside, the little coastal town we visited was lovely. All manner of charming shops selling trinkets and baubles. Also some fantastic book shops, cafes and restaurants, one of which we stopped in to get some work done on our laptops in a cozy little windowed nook:

I wish that had been the focus of this article but when basic infrastructure you were planning on using doesn't work, and no backup option is provided, it has a way of becoming your main focus in a big fucking way.

One charging station in the entire fucking town and it only has one ChaDeMo and one J1772. And only one of those works. How do you like that shit? I like it extremely little. If you need me, I'll be in my Anger Dome.

One of those times when life kicks you in the nards so hard, one of them goes up your throat and you spit it out, all covered in blood.

Lmfao...dude you are hilarious. this sounds like a series of unfierunate events. Life really was prepared to screw you that day. Hehehe.

Quick question ...you said in one of your posts that it takes about 10hrs to charge your car full if charging in your garage. How come the charge stations charge it faster?

Higher voltage and amperage. The one I have at home is 110 volt, 30 amp. The public chargers are 240 volt, 20 amp. 110 times 30 equals 3,300 watts, or 3.3 kilowatts. But really the car will accept only about a kilowatt of that in level 1 charging mode. 240 volts times 20 amps equals 4,800 watts, or 4.8 kilowatts, which the car can use all of in level 2 charging mode. So the effective charging rate of level 2 is close to 5 times faster than level 1.

Wow this is cool. Never really knew the electric car is now in circulation . I wonder why we havnt seen any in Nigeria yet.

So... to put all these pieces together - you had an amazing day with @amandarichards. It was an adventure, isn't it lovely?
It isn't that bad as it sounds lol.

That is why you need a miniature teleporter in your pocket.
And something like that won't happen again :D
But I think this trip was fun, now you have another story to tell!

I'm sorry, but that was funny, I saw a rant contest going on somewhere, I think yours would have a chance at winning, but I can't remember where it was. They need something like for battery jump starts, I had one that you plugged in the wall, when it was fully charged you could use it to jump start your car. Someone needs to do a portable charger like that for e-cars. At least like you said, you could use gas if needed.

This is what I hate about electronics, computers included. Shit always works good in theory but something always goes wrong.

This is an illustrative and relevant example of the struggles of emerging technology.

To wit, electric is better in almost every measurable way to conventional internal combustion engine technology, but the infrastructure for conventional engines has many decades of advantage over electric. Parts, trained technicians, fuel, etc - electric is simply at a disadvantage here (for now.)

Personally I'd still get a diesel engine, given all available options. It's dirty compared to other technologies, sure, but you can make working diesel fuel using dirty cooking oil/grease, and a few simple chemicals. Plus the MPG is amazing compared to gasoline. Hard to beat that for practicality when the zombie apocalypse comes. Or when the inevitable Pacific coast tsunami strikes, disrupting local logistics and infrastructure services for weeks/months depending on severity.

Tech aside, the Oregon coast is simply magnificent. Don't know if you were anywhere near Cannon Beach, but that's my favorite spot in the northern coast portion. Lots of little shops, beautiful coastline, almost a slightly European flavor to the place. Very soothing.

Anyway, glad you got things sorted out in the end.

Happy trails!

The interesting shops, tourist attractions and restaurants are why I go to the coast. The beach itself is miserably cold and windy for much of the year.

Maybe your anger at that time was enough to charge your battery, well it really suck if there is only a single charging station which inturn has one ChaDeMo and one J1772, I am not aware about this ChaDeMo and J1772, but I think it is related to charging somehow, you would have really got pissed, this pissed off mood let you to mail them, maybe they will introduce a new station, hope so. In the meantime I think you enjoyed that little town.

ChaDeMo and J1772 are basically different plug types that offer different amounts of power. Like how different cell phones use different plugs, except the plugs for electric cars are different based on how fast they can recharge your car.

Just like the chargers giving different outputs depending upon the battery of the car and time taken to charge that battery.

Looks like one of those days when the whole universe is against you..
At least your day was still saved..

Its like all of the demons against you attack just at almost same time. A series of unending things that continued for the day mostly when you want a ride for calm or thrill maybe. And that too it hasn't happened once on the coast but the mt. Hood too. Maybe the travel demons don't want you to go on a ride. Alas great to see you didn't let all the situations let you down and stood up one after the other. This shows your character never staying down and it of course is best to do in such a situation.
If you are "Afraid" you will fumble but not in your case. Bravery i see.

Better luck next time. Looks like you had a bad day. A day full of unfortunate events. First snowstorm, then electric charger, and then the dead phone. Don't spoil your mood and have a chill pill.

Interesting! I want to say about the discharge of the battery, the charge can drop from 14 to 0, not only when working, the phone has an application that allows the phone not to turn off until the whole charge is exhausted!

Hahah... sounds like series of unfortunate events.. i hope your trip gets better next time and i wish you more fun in your travels

When a person faces situation like this , it tries to make you the worst at the moment ....but provokes up the good in you...
Maybe when someday you see someone stuck in the same situation....you will defnitely help him .....

Dnt wry abt the single bad day..

That feeling! No words to express. But i advice nexxt time " Breathe and Let Go again!"

Ah fuck! That blows. I was midway through scrolling to find part 1 of your stickman adventures when I saw this post, and I had to click because of the title.

My birthday is may 25th, and being from the east coast, I've had few opportunities to go snowboarding on my birthday. Fresh out of high school, I bummed my way to hood one may and finally had that opportunity.

We leave our campsite, head to govy for breakfast, get 3/4 of the way up the access road and get a call from our friend ahead of us, saying not to bother parking.

Despite the beautiful weather in govy, apparently it was the one day of the spring they closed the lifts for wind hold.

I was really unhappy about the whole thing but I then had a strange night in Portland which ended up with me finding myself walking the burnside bridge without any recollection of why or where I was coming from.

I can't say I've ever had a night in Portland that wasn't downright strange.
