10. Galešnjak

In Croatia, nature took care of herself to prove that love exists and created the beautiful small island Galešnjak in the shape of a heart, today known as the "Croatian island of love" located in the center of the Adriatic. The uninhabited island of Galešnjak is located in North Dalmatia. Covered with forest and sporadically olive trees, known for its many hares, for which this island has become a habitat of nature. Only 0.132 kilomers of square footage of this beautiful island was accidentally discovered in 2009 through the Google Earth web search engine, and was immediately promoted on TV channels such as CNN and BBC. The whole world has known Galešnjak, the island in the most accurate heart shape in the world. photo: noclegowo.pl

9. Spinalonga

Spinalonga is a small island adjacent to Crete. Until 1957, there was a leper colony there. Its attraction is also the Venetian fortress from the end of the 16th century. The Spinalonga island is separated by a few hundred meters of isthmus from the village of Elounda on the north-eastern coast of Crete. You can get there by boat or yacht from the town of Aghios Nikolaos. The rocky islet is one of the greatest attractions of this part of the Cretan coast. Why? Crowds of tourists from around the world are attracted by, among others a former leper colony. It was founded in 1903. photo: stalis.club/spinalonga/

8. Alcatraz

The island of Alcatraz in the bay of San Francisco is known primarily because of the strict security prison that operated from 1934 to 1963. The prison was closed due to high maintenance costs and construction errors, which supposedly could have facilitated the escape of prisoners detained here. Throughout the 29 years of activity by Alcatraz, more than 1,500 criminals have been involved (most of them were recidivists who were convicted of further sentences). One of the most famous prisoners in the history of Alcatraz was the famous Al Capone, who served here for 5 years (Al Capone was also one of the first prisoners detained here - he was numbered 85). In total, in Alcatraz 14 attempts of escapes were recorded, in which 34 prisoners took part - 6 guards shot dead, 2 drowned, 5 lost and the rest were caught. photo: familytree.com

7. Hashima

In the years 1887-1974 coal was mined on the island, so high blocks of flats were built for miners and their families. A huge wall of a breakwater was built around the island, which made the island look a bit like a warship. The year 1974 was a breakthrough for the island - coal mining was ceased then, as a result of which all residents disappeared. Today, Hashima is deserted, which is why she is called a ghost town. Hashima "appeared" in the film "Skyfall" about the adventures - James Bond. photo: Jordy Meow / Wikimedia [Creative Commons]

6. Tashirojima - Island of cats

Tashirojima is a tiny island with an area of only 3 square kilometers. Cats hit the island at the end of the eighteenth century, when the island began to grow silkworms. The new inhabitants of the island were supposed to protect ready-made silk threads from mice and rats. The cats are reportedly 4 times more than humans. There are 10 cathedrals on the island, several "cat-like" buildings designed by cartoonists of manga and about 50 cat sculptures. The part of the island where the cat's complex was built is called Manga Island. photo: petsetter.com/

5. Ilha da Queimada Grande - Island of snakes

Snake Island is a tiny (just 0.5 km square) islet south of Sao Paulo. Its terrifying nickname is due to the huge amount of venomous snakes that live there. According to various sources, 1 to 5 snakes live on one square meter, the bite of which causes severe damage to the nervous system, kidneys and internal hemorrhages. The island is of course uninhabited and quarantined. photo: dimitriganzelevitch.blogspot.com/

4. Aogashima

Aogashima is a small island and a small village in the Philippine Sea. It is also the least populated place in Japan. There are approximately 200 people permanently living on 6 square kilometers. And it's not really surprising. There are few daredevils who dare to settle inside an extinct volcano. photo: iloveflair.co/article.php?id=111&sid=3&pt=ART-ITECTURE

3. Easter Island

Easter Island is inhabited by 3791 inhabitants, and the only place is Hanga Roa. The island of Chile is located at a distance of 2078 km from the nearest inhabited island. It owes its name to the date of the discovery - Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen reached the coast of the island on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1722. The symbol of Easter Island is the large stone statues depicting the heads, called Moai. In total, 887 Moai were discovered, the largest of which was 10 meters high and weighed 75 tonnes! photo: andbeyond.com

2. Socotra

Socotra is, according to many, the most cosmic place on earth. Sokotra belongs to Yemen is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 250 km from the Horn of Africa and 380 km from the Arabian Peninsula consisting of 4 islands. Islands included in the archipelago look like cut from another world - there are trees here that you will not find anywhere else. Dragon trees (Dracaena cinnabari) also called dragon-blood trees, because of the red juice they produce, are the flagship of the island - they are only found here. photo: podroze.gazeta.pl/podroze/56,114158,10472337,Sokotra___wyspa_nie_z_tego_swiata.html

1. Isla de las Muñecas

A small island in Mexico located on the eastern outskirts of the city of Mexico, in the Xochimilco district. Around 1950, the Mexican Santana Barrera, who was the caretaker, lived alone on an abandoned island. According to legend, in 1951 he heard the sounds of a girl drowning in the canal. He hurried to help, but he arrived too late. The child was drowned, and in the water he found only a doll, which he hung on a tree. Later in the same place he found more dolls, which he also suspended on trees. Overwhelmed by Barrera's obsession, he began to collect old and damaged dolls and for 50 years he placed them on the whole island. According to some of the messages, he did it to calm the spirit of the tragically deceased child. In 2001, the caretaker's body was found in the same place where the girl supposedly drowned. The reasons for his death have not been fully explained - most likely he drowned while being drunk - and the island was stuck by bad fame, which made the place come to be visited by tourists. photo: ciudadypoder.mx/la-isla-las-munecas-xochimilco/
