A day in a life – Part 1 Chestnut Harvesting – Village of Bjelovac – Croatia

Every year somewhere around October/November my husband, my daughter, my dog and I go to a village near our hometown called Bjelovac and sometimes we hike, go to the woods, have picnics and just have fun.

This time we went to the woods and wanted to harvest some chestnuts. The scenery is beautiful, big wide meadows, a forest filled with oak and chestnuts trees, and we also stumbled upon a deer feeder that hunters maintain and leave food for the deer.

When you walk a bit deeper into the woods you can find a wellhead and drink cold water and rest from your journey. This is actually a bit older photo (I did not take any photos of the well that day).

The wellhead was used in the past by the people who live in the village and as it was their only source of water, they had to carry the water in buckets for a mile or so to get to their homes. Today the wellhead is visited only by a handful of local people and hikers who find it the woods.

We did not have to walk for a long, the chestnuts were everywhere. If you know your way around you can climb and get to the mountain hut. It is lovely, benches all around, wooden tables, a barbecue for anyone who wishes to use it. We were welcomed by the gatekeeper, basically a person who stays here all the time and takes care of the mountain hut whole year around. You can buy sodas, ice-cream and a cold beer.
