Travel Oslo Norway 2017 Grand Hotel Oslo Restaurant Fjord Oslo

in travel •  7 years ago

The goal was to see the Northern Lights, and Norway is one of the premier locations to view them. The stopover in Oslo was just a stopover. A few days in one of the most beautiful international, cosmopolitan cities in northern Europe.

A few surprises! How many people were touring Oslo in March when it's still pretty cold, wet, icy and snow around most of the edges of the city. And the quantity and quality of dining venues in the city center. From the hamburger at the food mall, which is actually very upscale; to the other two restaurants we chose for dinner and even the restaurant in our hotel.

All were well prepared and well presented with an emphasis on locally grown organic fruits and vegetables, and the freshest fish and game from lakes, streams, oceans and farms native to the country. No GMOS!

Highly recommend The Grand Hotel with little rooms. On one of the main drags, Karl Johns gate and a 3 minute walk from the train. It's 5 star but you can find great deals off season. The service is impeccable, a restaurant on site and a rooftop bar with great views. Also Restaurant Fjord, amazing prix fixe, about 5 courses with perfect wine pairings. The owner/chef is on site and mingles throughout each seating.

Yes, Oslo is cold in fall autumn and winter but well worth it considering the great deals available off season.
