Rainy day memories

It's rainy today. It's not particularly cold, but the dampness does make one yearn for a hot cuppa and a warm blanket.
I don't mind the rain...I actually quite like it. We get a lot of tourists in the summer months and if it happens to rain, they just don't know what to do with themselves. Often I hear, 'oh, I feel bad for the people who've come here for their vacation and it's raining!'
Um, I don't.
I think it is from years of camping as a child and remembering that feeling of swimming all day long, until the sun went down and a little chill started to set in. With wet hair and shriveled fingers and toes, we change into our shorts and sweatshirts and sit by the fire, warming the chill out.

Our first visit to Iceland, I did a lot of research to be sure I was prepared for the weather. We bought rain coats and pants, as I read that it rained a lot. And it did...pretty much every day...but not consistently. And if you're in Iceland, you had better visit a couple of the beautiful waterfalls.

But, anyway, the rain today is reminding me of the most recent trip we took. On our last full day in the Myvatn region of Northern Iceland, it was pouring rain when we woke up. But we had decided we wanted to visit the Krafla caldera. We weren't going to let a little rain stop us.
This is Viti Maar (Crater of Hell), a volcanic crater.

It ended up being a day of very interesting scenery and a treacherous hike through slippery mud. But we (well, at least I) loved it.

And we got some amazing cloud action that night!

And a great sunset.

Wow nice slice of the planet there. Can't let bad weather stop the adventure! That is when the fairweather explorers miss out.

Glad I picked this out of the new posts feed. Will follow!

Wonderful! I hope future posts bring as much pleasure. Thank you.

Whoa it is mind blowing and also incredible. Awesome post thanks for sharing.

It is a truly magical place, in my mind.

Amazing photos and that sun lighting the landscape, breathtaking! Yes, the wonderful feel of rain after a day of play in the sun and sand, such a good memory. :)

I imagine that is part of the joy I get in Iceland...the adventure is great, but doubly so when I think of the 'warming up' portion of the day.

Never been to a caldera before. "Cradle of Hell" sounds a little harsh. It looks pretty peaceful there, actually.

That's Iceland for you...crazy names for stuff. It looks peaceful but the rain was harsh and heavy and we only went a little way up the trail because the mud was really slippery. Very scary but totally worth it.

Glad it didn't go off when you were there!

haha. I'm glad I didn't fall in!
