Somewhere not so far away on the other side of the Globe are the Solomon islands .The islands are found next to Papua New Guinea just slightly above Australia. With the presence of the word Guinea ,you would think it closer to Africa considering Guinea and Guinea Bisau of West Africa. Yet fascinatingly, people of Solomon islands are dark with a good population sporting blonde Afros….
Apparently, the people of Solomon islands have the darkest skin outside Africa. Thus they are not true Africans but rather referred to as Melanesian.
Blondes Explained
The Melanesian blondes have intrigued many people which has led to rise of various theories to explain the phenomenon. One explanation is that it was due to the influx of outsiders in the island since the 19th century. This is with the Germans taking the southern part as its protectorate and later Australians and British companies setting up coconut plantations in the 20th century. A theory which the locals totally disagree… According to them, it is due to a diet rich in sea food as well as constant exposure to the sun.
However, neither of the theories are true. According to recent investigations the Melanesian blondes are due to random mutation in their genes. Sean Myles a genetics researcher at Scotia Agriculture College proved this by collecting saliva samples of 43 blonde heads and 42 dark heads and running tests on them. What he discovered showed that the two possessed very different versions of the gene TYRP1 that controls pigmentation in humans. Showing indeed it had undergone mutation or change. Therefore , most Melanesian people carry the mutant recessive gene. Hence the blondes must have inherited the genes from both parents thus the hair.
