BkkShadow Visits SOWETO Township in J'Burg, South Africa.

Soweto (South-West Township) first came to be in 1963 as a group of townships to the south west of Johannesburg in South Africa. It later became infamous after the Soweto uprising of 1976 which left 21 dead, including children.

SOUTH WEST TOWNSHIP

The townships were originally established after the bubonic plague broke out in the slums of Johannesburg. However, it was later under apartheid rule that countless black South Africans were forcefully relocated from Johannesburg and its surrounding suburbs to Soweto and the other townships nearby. The townships have improved a lot since those days but as you will see many still live in abject poverty and poor conditions.

During the World Cup in 2010 we decided to take a trip to SOWETO and have a walk around. These are my pictures from the township and the surrounding area. I hope that with some tourism dollars and development the township will continue to improve its conditions for those living there.
