Mexico is not a hellhole (with video)

in travel •  8 years ago  (edited)

People in the US seem to have a fascination with saying how awful Mexico is. In December 2014, after having lived here for the best part of a year, I recorded this video to attempt to set the record straight.

FUD

I can only assume that there is a lot of media talking about the horrors of Mexico. Those things never reached me in Australia, especially because I rarely watch television. I only wonder about how they address the subject in the press, to make people's opinions about Mexico so strong - I imagine a five minute section after every news segment saying "By the way, just in case you forgot, Mexico is scary, a dangerous place, people die there. Stick around - we'll be back after these messages!"

To put on my tin foil hat for a second, I have to wonder about the influence of the US government. Whenever I go on the Australian governments "Smartraveler" site, I notice that you can pick virtually any country, and it will tell you that there is an alert on that country. If you want to run a taxfarm, it's best to give the illusion of freedom to your livestock. If you want them to feel free without running away, simply convince them that they're in the "best country (taxfarm) on Earth". Of course, you have to target the neighbouring taxfarms especially, to make sure the loyal cattle don't think they can just walk across the border to another amazing country.

The economics of Mexico

In the comments on YouTube, one lady decided to tell me that Mexico ain't that hot, that her husband worked there as an engineer and only made $30 a day, and that I should pull my head out of my privileged ostrich-hole. There is little I find so ironic as someone accusing me of being privileged, while in the same breath, revealing that they are blinded by their privilege. The fact is, $30 a day is a lot of money, in Mexico, and actually, in most of the world. When I reviewed the statistics she provided, I realised that they stated, while wages in Mexico are going down in dollar terms, they're actually increasing in terms of purchasing power.

In recent years, more people have been coming to Mexico from the US, than the other way around. There's also a lot of irony in that fact - that so many people in the US are getting riled up about the threat of immigrants, when perhaps what they really need to worry about is that, people don't want to move to the US any more. Don't get me wrong - the US is great in so many ways, but in terms of opportunity and freedom, people are voting with their feet.

"Welcome! This is your house!"

Don't believe the hype. Mexico is great, and a lot freer than many other countries in the world. If you come down to Guadalajara, let me know and we'll go for a mezcal.

Interesting article. You might want t read the following:

https://geopoliticalfutures.com/why-mexico-belongs-in-north-america/

Some investors feel that Mexico has the potential to be a very important regional power. i.e. it's North America, not South America.

Nice. Actually, I think it's possible that Mexico might be in a class of its own. From a regulatory perspective, Mexico is much freer than the US. It's possible that in a few years, many companies might decide to set up shop here because of that. Time will tell.

"30$ a day is a lot of money, in Mexico, and actually, in most of the world"
Agreed with you @churdtzu here in Venezuela an engineer can earn 5$ a day and still be a lot of money but the inflation of my country makes it look like nothing, only to eat well or better said what you can find to eat you need to earn at least like 15$ a day.

My friend in La Isla de Margarita said to me a while back that there was a position open for an English teacher, and maybe I'd like to come down. I asked how much it pays... She said 15,000 Bs (u$d 15 for other readers) per month. I was a little shocked. I decided not to take that job... I'd still like to go to Venezuela though.

A couple of friends told me that it's not that dangerous outside of Caracas, but another friend told me not to go and that my other friends were obviously trying to kill me. What's your opinion? Can the whitest man in Mexico survive in Venezuela?

Now the teacher job can give you like 60$ per month, almost nothing, to have a decent life you need to earn at least 300$ per month, caracas is dangerous, i´m from Valencia that is to 2 hours from caracas and i have moved with my family some years ago because It became very dangerous too, now i´m living in a little town far away from the big cities and the life is much more quite here.

Okay, so it is possible to find somewhere away from the madness there.

Yes brother it is possible, and for traveling we still having amazing places to visit.

They need to make their tax farm look better than the other tax farms.

Exactly. Remarkable word magicians

Good article. Love Mexico but some of the things seen in the press makes one think twice before traveling there.

Don't believe the hype!

I just got back from La Paz mexico this weekend and man is it beautiful there! I happen to notice there is a huge amount of retired Americans and Canadians there. I would mind retiring there myself! Great post @churdtzu

La Paz is a beautiful city... I remember that I went there and ate manta ray tacos. I didn't expect that. Got some revenge for Steve Irwin that day.

I never been to Mexico and what I know is some movies and now your post.
We can live in all the places because we are humans and humans are created with the ability to adapt.
If we respect the people that are next to us and always keep an onest face we can live in any place.
We canot say that all the places are bad, for sure in Mexico some places are just waiting to be seen.

Yes. I think it's easier to adapt in Mexico, and in Latin America in general, because of the hospitality.

So far, I've found that every place I travel to is not as bad as people say it is... Even Mexicans think Acapulco is dangerous, but that's not what my experience tells me. Sometimes I wonder if everything bad about the world is 99% fabricated, just people throwing shadow puppets to scare us.

Thank you @churdtzu
I was born in Mexico and its disgusting to hear some people talk about it. Specially when they have never been there.
If you get a chance you should visit Puebla and its volcano.
Its beautiful!

Thanks @echoesinthemind, I have been to the state of Puebla, but not the city or the volcano. In the picture at the bottom of my post, we're in the mountains of Puebla, in a village called Pachuquilla. I've never seen a volcano in person before... However, I have watched a few videos of UFOs circling around Popocatépetl.

By the way, here is our Facebook group for posts by Mexicans, in Spanish: https://www.facebook.com/groups/905495306253579/

Unfortunately, people aren't posting much Spanish content on Steemit yet, but I'm sure that will change with time. I might post a few things in Spanish in the coming days.

Thanks!
Spanish post will come... I think its just a matter of time until more folks join.
Looking foward to reading your post (:

I upvoted it, but I have not had cable tv for a few years. I have been in college for over a year and in a year I will have a degree in biz admin.

It sure isn't. Viva Mexico!!!

:D

watched your video. De acuerdo!

Gracias!

Nice post. I live in Mexico and while some parts are bad, Mexico is a huge place and have many amazing spots and also cities that are very advanced.
