It's a good way to cut your expenses while traveling! Moustly people who offers to stay at there place is nice, most of them will take yout to walk around a city and tell a stories about it, will show places to eat etc.... Make a conversation with fiew of them who lives in city you want to travel to and pick a choise! And offcorse in website are rewievs about every couchsurfer!
