Mayberry Musings

I'm sitting here watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show and having random thoughts. Among them...this is when television was good. I happen to live in North Carolina, not too far from Mount Airy, which was the inspiration for the mythical Mayberry.

When I travel north to the midwest to visit family, I have to travel right through Mount Airy. A few years back, they built a bypass highway. It comes to my mind that I haven't stopped in "Mayberry" ever since. One of the places I used to like to visit in Mount Airy was called the Snappy Lunch (they are only open for breakfast and lunch). It is the only real business in Mount Airy ever mentioned in the television show. It has been a landmark location for nearly 100 years.

The Snappy Lunch is famous for their pork chop sandwich. That is some good down home eating right there. The menu is a typical diner type menu with a healthy selection of biscuits. But if you stop, you have to try the pork chop sandwich. The place has always been busy when I visited and they close right after lunch. So the earlier you get there, the better. Now I have a hankering...and that is a two hour drive. And it's dinner time. I'm going to have to find an excuse to stop up there.

If you ever pass through North Carolina and find yourself on I-74, you are being rerouted from an old highway that used to run right through Mount Airy. If you want to try a famous pork chop sandwich, take some time and divert from the bypass. It is only a five minute ride into town from the highway. You won't be disappointed.

omg, remember growing watching some of this, or Perry Mason, Twilight Zone, Rocky & Bullwinkle... all the re-runs, how few choices we had back in the day (-: but they were enjoyable / following you back (-:

I'm from Alabama and I grew up with Opie. lol I've always loved "Andy and Barney", Mayberry is a lot like the small north Alabama rural town I grew up in. Our town has grown and changed tho unfortunately not always for the better. I still laugh at the same shows and love watching it. I hope we always can because they don't make 'em like that anymore. :)

True. They don't make them like that anymore. I would just as soon watch old television shows as the news these days. I am normally a news junkie. But there really is no such thing as news anymore. Just degrees of propaganda.

You are right about propaganda media!!! I can't even stand 5 minutes of Fox and Friends. lol

Thats awsome! Yes sir, when tv use to be good... Might have to try one of those pork sandwiches. Is Mount Airy N S E or W in the state? I use to live next to Murphy.

It is northwest. It is due north of Winston Salem.

I've been there, it's awesome. I haven't been to the Snappy Lunch though, and I'll have to do that and get the pork chop sandwich next time I go!

It's such a pretty drive out there.
