Nomadic Nuggets! A Real Alaskan Totem Pole. (Original Photos)

in travel •  7 years ago

G'evening, steemit. So this is my second-ever Nomadic Nugget; which is basically a place for me to start posting my non-nature photos and stories. You know, stuff that doesn't really fit into the "Daily Nature Fix" genre. Anyway, this one is about a legit totem pole that we saw in Sitka, Alaska. I don't remember a ton about it, but I do recall it wasn't a real old one or anything. I think it was carved in the 1990's.

It was huge though. It had to be at least 40 feet tall and a few feet in diameter. I think it was a redwood tree, or cedar. I also remember the sign saying it was to honor indigenous natives who died while fighting the Russians when they were expanding into the territory. Interesting stuff though. Very cool to see one in person. There are still some ancient ones in Alaska, I believe. I may have to put that on my list of things to see.

We saw a bunch in the park near the port in Vancouver, BC. They're so interesting. I wish I could remember the name of the park.

It's Stanley Park

I have a few trees I'm going to be felling soon around our property and I'm seriously considering making a totem pole or two. lol

This is really beautiful
Honestly @customnature it great and orginal

I'm glad to see this beauty, I don't have totems here, besides the green around is fantastic!

Where are you located again? I think I asked you once before; pardon me for forgetting!

That's beautiful.... Love the way its covered up in designs

Yes it's cool to see examples of things or history we we're been told to make memories

Such amazing pieces of art. A bit of research showed that totem poles are unique to that part of the world and used to show family lineage... I'd love to be able to see one in person. Thanks for the share, keep the nomadic nuggets coming haha

Thanks, man! You probably did more research that I did for the post! lol I appreciate that. I'll keep the nugget train rolling. They're just going to good to use when I don't have much time or have a mental block on what kind of Daily Nature Fix post to make.

Did you go to Fairbanks? That’s where bob ross is from

We did not get to Fairbanks, but we are looking to go back up there in September and I'm going to try to visit that town. Bob Ross is my idol. lol I actually oil paint, thanks to him.BNW00.jpg
