Travel - Visiting a Haunted Castle Outside Inverness, Scotland

in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

My wife and I did a self guided tour of Scotland with another couple a few years back and stayed one night at historic Castle Stuart. It was built in 1561 and was originally owned by James Stuart, half brother of Mary, Queen of Scots. We had the castle to ourselves and didn’t see any staff or other guests until the next day at breakfast.

As we were unloading the car we were greeted by four fat little ponies. We were warned to be sure to close the castle door when we came and went because the ponies liked to get into the castle and make fat pony messes.

The castle had two towers, the haunted one and the not haunted one. My wife and I chose not to stay with the ghosts in the haunted tower.

Guests are advised to pack light because the stone spiral staircase going up to the room was narrow and had a rope instead of a handrail.

The castle had everything you would expect in a castle, including a Great Hall with crests, flags, and suits of armor.

It also had a library well stocked with Scotch whiskey and a secret door behind the bookcase.

Beyond the secret door was a giant snooker table with more Scotch!

Combine Scotch, a twelve foot snooker table, and poor billiard skills and you end up taking all night just to finish one game.
