Hike Guide - Herman's Lake Colorado

One challenge when hiking in Colorado is finding a trail that is deep enough into the Mountains to have truly remarkable views without having to drive for the better half of the day or take an ill-equipped car onto questionable terrain. For people looking for a challenging hike that strikes this balance, the 6.4 mile out and back hike to Herman's lake is a great option.

Getting There

The trail head is 43 miles west of Denver along the i-70 corridor. Take exit 218 and immediately double back with 2 right turns at the intersection on to Watrous Way. The trailhead is in the middle of the parking lot and there are signs with information about wildlife and trails in the area.

The Hike

The hike to the lake is relatively straightforward, but far from easy. For the first 2.8 miles you will be following along a small segment of the Continental Divide Trail, or CDT, a trail that runs along the rocky mountains from Canada to Mexico. After nearly 3 miles the CDT bears right to continue up and over the peaks along the gulch, but following the trail to the left will take you to the lake. This entire trail is uphill and you gain 1,700 feet in elevation over this time as you pass from forests at the bottom, up a gulch and up past tree line into alpine tundra.

At the top the trail will quickly disappear, but you can circle the lake or climb the rock field of the west side. Depending on the season there may be carpets of wildflowers that you will need to carefully sidestep.

Things to Consider

• Because of how accessible the lot is, this trail can get busy! Arrive early on weekends (around 8) in order to beat the crowds and have the trail to yourself
• Be prepared, especially if you are not used to the altitude. Bring enough water, snacks and a few layers of clothing as temperatures and weather can change quickly at altitude.
• The trail is generally clear June through September. Any other months may require microspikes based on snowfall, and late November through early April may require snowshoes. Don't travel on terrain you're not comfortable with.
• This hike is in the Arapahoe National Forest which is a part of the Clear Creek Ranger District.
