Ali's Surf Camp Restaurant in Cabarete, Dominican Republic

in travel •  6 years ago

I have been in Dominican Republic for a few days now. Enjoying the relative warmth and for some reason relative lack of humidity compared to where I have been living for the past 10 years in Thailand. I don't understand what is happening here but it must have something to do with currents.

Anyway, this is about a wonderful restaurant that I went to tonight called Ali's Surf Camp Restaurant. Some people just call it Ali's Camp.

I think the first thing that people notice about Ali's Surf Camp Restaurant is that they cant find it. There is only one main road in Cabarete and well, Ali's is not on it. You have to pass through a guard gate to even enter the community that the restaurant is in but trust the google map as it is correct and honestly, this place is worth looking for.

Once you arrive, you will notice they don't even have a sign on the street, but get out of the car anyway. They stay busy without attracting massive crowds of "lookey-loos" and that is part of the reason why they stay amazing. Plus, you have the added bonus of knowing that you actually had to look for this place, it wasn't just shown to you.

horrible photo from a horrible camera phone

The staff are a bit slow because there are not many of them, however, once you get your patience about you and read the menus that are on the walls (none will be delivered to the table) you realize that the prices are extremely low. We ordered a full rack of ribs, some thin-sliced Argentinian beef (my friends will kill me for not remembering what it is called,) 2 large beers, and two glasses of white wine.

I didn't take pictures of everything but I got a picture of the meat, which was the main attraction of the dinner anyway. Oh, the dinner came with potatoes, salad, and roasted veg also.

This meat, was cooked perfectly. Gordon Ramsey would have been pleased and we loved every single bite. There was no chance that any of this awesome food was going to be in a take-away box.

This might be one of the best values that I have ever experienced in my life. I have had cheaper food, but not cheaper AND of this caliber.

We had

  • a full rack of ribs
  • a full set of whatever that thin-sliced Argentinian beef is called
  • 4 starter salads
  • roasted potatoes
  • steamed veggies
  • 2 large bottles of beer (4 glasses)
  • 2 glasses of white wine

All of this, served properly and with a smile by super-friendly people chimed in at below $40 TOTAL. I am in awe. Less than it costs for us to all go to 5 Guys and get average burgers we got to have this.

Basically, if you are in Cabarete, Dominican Republic (and really, if you can get down there you should) find a way to get to Ali's Surf Camp Restaurant. You will NOT regret this decision.

Good to know that you are having a a very nice holiday!
Amazing place to eat in Cabarete.
So, you were in Thailand for ten years! That’s a long time! Why did you leave the country?!

Cheers.

BTW. You need a new mobile phone.

haha about the mobile phone and yes, i know. I am still in Thailand. just visiting friends and family now.

Thanks for the reply! It took me about nine months to have enough savings to buy my iPhone 6 Plus, it is really worth it!

I think you must have been working in the film industry or television, you know all the films in the market! But it isn’t healthy watching several films in one day! Great to be out and about and be on a vacation.

Hope you’ll be having a good time and continue to live in Thailand, a place of extremes and contradictions! You could find the best, the good, the bad and ugly on almost all aspects of life here! It’s a puzzle to me all the time.

Goodness me @gooddream this post is making me so hungry! 12 days until I am out of China and back to eating everything I possibly can! Oh man I can't wait!!

yeah, i have been gaining weight even though i am drinking a lot less. you back for good or just for a visit?

I’m going to gain a lot to weight I can feel it haha! I’ll have to try and workout to even out the insane announts of food I’ll be destroying!

I’m back for about 3 months :) however, I might stay for good as I’ve been thinking about it a bit more recently. When are you / are you going back to Thailand soon?

my doge is still in Thailand. Not gonna abandon her. I am moving up to the north of Thailand because while i like the country, the intense heat and humidity is something I am completely sick of. If the north of Thailand wows me, i will stay, if not, i will move on.

But then there are visa issues.

This publication could be an excellent paid advertisement for the restaurant, @gooddream. I love how you tell us about the great opportunity to get a site without noise, economic and where you can enjoy an exquisite meal. Your days in DR have been wonderful then, you have been able to exercise outdoors without so much heat and you have eaten very rich. Travel is one of the pleasures of life that I hope to enjoy someday, I think it is a good way to enrich the spirit. I hope you continue to enjoy and tell us about the experience of this trip. Greetings.

they didn't need to pay me.. haha, but thanks for your words. Getting their amazing food at that price was payment enough :)

Hahaha! It's true, good attention is priceless. It is valued when good opportunities arrive without looking for them. It feels very, very good when we go to a site of this type and leave more than satisfied. @gooddream, do you stay in DR or do you go back to Thailand?

I'm not a really meat person but the meat on the photo looks awfully good.

Very nice and awesome food!

Does Swell Surf Camp still exist in Cabarete? I went there a few times in 2011 (still have the t- shirt!) when I was working in Haiti, nice owners, great staff...

yep, it is still there. I saw one of their people today. Apparently they are still doing well.

I just read myself hungry. And added Dominican Republic to my travel list.
