Spooky wooden carvings in Dominican “museum”

I put museum in quotes because it isn’t an official museum but rather a collection of oddities that were gathered by an eccentric private collector over the years. Rumor has it that his neighbors were quite scared of him and he was independently wealthy by means he never explained.

The “Castle of the King of the Earth” (“King” is not Spanish obviously but dude was eccentric) is located in an ominous position at Sosua Beach in the Dominican Republic. The history of this building is that the wealthy owner kept to himself but also continually added to his collection of statues and also made his structure taller and taller each year with “towers” or steeples reaching to the sky and kind of unsafe looking observation towers. At the time I visited in Nov of 2018 there was exposed rebar steel at the higher levels of the castle indicating that he had intended to continue building upwards.

So that is what I know about the building and the owner, which isn’t much I agree. His artwork collection was very macabre and this sort of thing really appeals to me.

unfortunately these are all stored in the outdoors and have very little protection from the elements. They are not really cared for and wont be around for long

So this stuff is really scary to me and the man who owned the place, well... there is so much more of this, including the rooms he slept in and a room so terrifying and strange that the guide would not accompany us to it - i think it might just be part of the act though.
