in travel •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello steemicians, I am Nelly and I love, people, travel, places and writing and i guess you do too. As a Geographer, I want to take you on a 60 days tour around my city;Abuja(Nigeria's fast evolving capital)!!!.
I have lived in this city since 1994, I shall be happy to take you into the distant parts of this city. Everything about how it became a city happened in my very eyes without missing a detail. I will also love @curie to follow through.

WHAT IS THIS TOUR ABOUT?
This tour is not actually about the vote(although I will appreciate your support when you like anything about it and it will help me a great deal during the tour)but I will seriously encourage you to still vote, its about my love for culture, geography(my field of study) places, people, and commerce. As inspired by @anomadsoul who is willing to learn about Africa(Nigeria) and other people who wants to know what Abuja looks like.
In this tour, I would visit all the local government areas in Abuja, I would vist monuments, markets, towns and villages, urban centres, residential areas, construction sites, government agencies, hotels, zoos, parks and gardens, peoples, and all I can daily and one at a time.
In each place I visit, we shall discuss, its life style, inhabitants, types of settlement, languages spoken, commercial activities. Within the period of this tour, you can suggest where you would want me to visit and what you will love to know about such places as far as they border within the Abuja.

HOW YOU CAN BE A PART OF IT
You can upvote each tour post, you can also resteem and tag me if you want me to visit any way for you and give details.
You are also allowed to notify me 48hours before the day you would love to join me. Please note that I shall not disclose details of places to visit next in order to keep the suspence, I will always make my visit a surprise. If I visit your town please tag me and if you will love to know when I will visit your town drop your town on the comment box and I will give you a notification via email.

WHEN WILL THIS TOUR BEGIN?
This tour is a 60days tour, and will begin from the First of January and through for 60days. However in these remaining days of December, i will use the two days to give you a background information of Abuja in general.
This information begins today!

MOVING NIGERIA'S CAPITAL TO ABUJA
Lagos was formerly the capital city of Nigeria. In 1990 the then military head of state General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida made the move in changing the location of the central seat of government.
He however gave satisfactory reasons for doing so which borders on the fact that Abuja is found in the centre of the Nation. He also further buttressed that the security of the country and its capital would be in danger since Lagos was close to the sea while Abuja was landlocked.
Thus in 1991, the capital called Abuja gained prominence and I was among the early birds who flew into this capital as early as 1994. It was a wrap of grassland!

ABUJA MASTER PLAN
The new capital was to be very different from Lagos. The master planners of Abuja had made sure of it, the then vice president (SIR Late Alex Ekuweme) oversaw the design and master plan of the city.
The Abuja Development master plan was to be undertaken in 6phases. Presently the phase one and two are about 90% completed, these involved the present Garki, Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, respectively, while phase 3 and 4 had barely started about a decade ago. This included Jabi, Gwarinpa, lugbe, Kubwa, etc.
As we grow and build the city, it is our desire that it becomes a hub for commerce, tourism, and provide sustainable living conditions.

FIRST INHABITANTS AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF ABUJA

You would not be mistaken if you call me one(lol). However there are settlers who where born in Abuja before the movement of the capital. They have made the place their homes, unlike various dwellers today, they were not in the village for greener pasture. They live depended on their crops, games and liveatock. They are often reffered to as the gbagi community. They have a funny way of carrying things in their backs and shoulders as shown in the picture below
Subsequently in the next part I shall write extensively about this great city.
This is just an introductory post to what is to come.

Thanks for sharing. I learnt some things I didn't know before.

Thanks for sharing info. I used to be good at general knowledge so I knew Abuja is capital of Nigeria.

A word of caution. Google is never the source of images. Click the image, then click the link it has with it and then right click the image in that link to open the image in new tab. The new tab contains the actual link. You should mention that as source or at least the link you opened from Google.

Just sharing for education. I did not vote much due to images.
