10 Second Travel Logs #5: Over the Edge at Cummins Falls

in travel •  7 years ago

Welcome To Another Episode of 10 Second Travel Logs!

This video was filmed looking out over the edge after we found the path to get out to the top of Cummins Falls, a 75-foot waterfall in Tennessee. Cummins Falls features a twin flow and multiple levels, which make climbing the falls a must-do for every trip.

Also, it offers a few great options for your hike to reach the falls. You can take a back path to reach its source river on the front-end and hike all the way to the edge of the drop, as we did to reach the point we were at in the video.

Or you can go through the park and descend from the forest to the water's edge, and hike from downstream of the falls all the way up to it. This hike is an absolute blast and I highly recommend it. On a hot summer day, there's nothing better than hiking all the way upstream, wading through the cool water, and then traversing the rocks around the river bend to get your first view of the falls in the distance. From there, enjoy the 360 degree river valley experience as the natural walls rise all around you, leading to the main falls.

When you get to the main falls, enjoy swimming in the water hole, catching some rays while laying back on the rocks, and of course...getting out to the base of the falls and climbing up its levels! Once you get up three levels, you can stand under the full flow of the waterfall, if you can handle the cold water. But tough it out, because it's epic y'all, not gonna lie. You're not a true adventurer if you're not bathing under a big ole waterfall!

Also, there a cove behind the big drop, so make sure to climb into it and get behind the flow to see the water crashing down at full speed just a few inches in front of you. This, and standing under the flow (again...you gotta do it!), gives you a good idea of how powerful the waterfall really is.

Cummins Falls has become really popular, so it can fill up with hundreds of visitors at the main falls during peak season. However, a great way to avoid the crowds in the summer is to get out to the falls really early in the day. This is a shot from one of our trips, when we got there early enough to have the entire falls to ourselves for an hour. Man, it truly was our own personal paradise, and I'm mad stoked for the summer to roll around again so that we can get back out there ASAP.
