We have spent the weekend in Szeged with my family. This is a wonderful university town in south Hungary. It is the third biggest town in our country, situated at the banks of river Tisza. The biggest attraction is the Summer Open Air Festival, but there are many interesting, pubs, restaurants and programmes to visit at other periods of the year as well. Unfortunately this weekend is a bit rainy, but we enjoyed the beautiful streets and buildings as we were walking around. Here are some photos of the most important sights.

Townhall

The "copf-style" building was originally built in 1728, but was re-built later a few times.

University

The university was funded by István Báthory, prince of Transsylvania in 1581. By that time it had two faculties: arts and theology. Nowadays the University has 12 faculties covering the fields of arts, sciences, law, economics and business administration, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, health sciences, education, agriculture and music. This picture depicts the main building of the faculty of arts:

Theatre

The theatre was built and had its first performance in 1883. The ecclectic/neo-baroque plans were done by Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer from Vienna. The building burnt down completely in 1885 and was re-built in 1886.

Movie

This is the biggest cinema building in Szeged, which was built in 1919.

Dome

This is one of the biggest basilicas in Hungary. Was built between 1913 and 1930 based on the plans of Frigyes Schulek and Ernő Foerk in a neo-roman style. This is probably the most importan tourist attraction in the town, therefore I will make another post about it in a couple of days. Here is the building from outside:

This is my favourite building, the Reök Palace, which is a secessian style building, it was built based of the plans of Ede Magyar in 1907.

I can imagine it being a very vibrant town in the summer

Yes, it is very exciting. A lot of interesting programmes going on, I can truly recommend the Open Air Festival, the Dome Square has a unique atmosphere and the huge stage is installed there... there are a lot of great performances: opera, musical, concerts etc.
