Trip to Morocco: Day 8 - Zagora and Tagounite

in travel •  6 years ago  (edited)

We were going to the sahara so we had to go from Ouarzazate to M'hamid El Ghizlane. This is a 300km drive through impressive landscapes. We took a shared taxi for a few dirham and we drove from Ouarzazate to Zagora. There is no direct to the desert of M'hamid. In Zagora you need to take another taxi for Tagounite, a little village. And in Tagounite you take your last taxi to M'hamid, the village in the desert where Morocco ends. This trip takes most of the day with switching taxis and waiting for their departure: they only drive when they are full with 6 people. The drive is impressive, you see the landscape change into desert while your drive. After the long drive you want to take some rest. We stayed in Relais Hamada du Draa. It's an oase in the desert where you can relax well and then start for your trip in the desert.

What made you decide to not rent a car in Morocco? I did once and the police asked for a bribe after I had a speeding ticket but otherwise was okay. Nice off road places!

We did not feel to drive ourselves because we wanted to look around to see the landscape and not keeping focused on the road. Also you get in contact with the people when in shared taxi, everyone talks and is interested. The drivers stops whenever you want and the cost of the taxis is really low (like around 20 USD for a 300km drive) And there is also the adventure of getting to your destination on public transport.

I love Morroco! When exactly have you been there? I can imagine summer there is too hot!

Morocco is a great country to travel. I have been there in summer and in spring. It is very hot in south of Morocco.
