The best places I have been in Rome (part 4): Campo de´Fiori

in travel •  7 years ago

Hi everyone!

in the previous posts we have been on the Capitol holland at the top of the Roman Forum (part 1), then we went to the Theater of Marcello (part 2) and finally we arrived to the Turtle Fountain (part 3).

In this post we well reach Campo de´Fiori - the flower square. As I said before, this is today one of the best locations to go by day and by night because the entire place changes completely during the day! But what today looks like a happy place, in the past it was build just with one purpose: tu burn people - alive!

Sounds scary - is scary!

In the picture above you see Giordano Bruno. He was a priest, who basically said, that the Church as institution was too rich and too far away from what Jesus predicted. Therefore he was burned alive on the Campo de´Fiori. Some year after a also Galileo Galilei has been brought there - he was convinced that the earth was not the center of the universe. The pope showed him the square and told him to think about his thesis again. So he did. His final words were something like : "Although it moved". But this was fine - he continued to live...

Today the Campo de´Fiori is extremely full of people during the day because every day there is a big (and expensive) market where people might by something to eat (the quality is very good) and some other stuff.

From this picture you see... almost nothing but the first line of the market stands. You have to Immagine this as a little chaotic place where everyone is laughing or talking in a genuine Roman-Italian style. You will love it! :)

At 17:00 I belline they start to clean up everything so the entire place is completely empty and cleaned up during the night. This is when all the clubs, cafes, pubs and restaurants put their tables outside and the tourists start to have dinner.

As you see in the image, it is not like someone being there - the entire square is completely full of people (Romans and tourists)! So it is the perfect place to have a cold beer and for sure it is the perfect place to get to know someone new :P

Recommendation

I can recommend you some place to go when on Campo de´Fiori:

Pub Drunkenship: Perfect location to meet English speaking Erasmus students. The beer is cold, the barkeeper a good guy (als of Fabio and tell tim, you are a fiend of Marco Marcone - the German guy of the Segway tours - and maybe you get a beer for free)

Forno Campo de´Fiori
They make the absolute best red pizza slices ever (but they close at 20:00).

La Carbonara
In this restaurant you eat traditional Roman food - but it is a bit expensive if you eat meat or fish!

Read more about the history of this place through the internet - it is amazing and definitely worth it!

Our trip through the best places to be in Rome will bring us to Piazza Navona (I have great pictures of it!!) and the extraordinary fountain of the 4 rivers...
