If there is a city in Mexico that can be said that loves golf, that has to be Los Cabos Hotels. Ever since the early 1990s when Jack Nicklaus surprised the golf world with his first and spectacular course design at Palmilla Golf Club in San José del Cabo, this beautiful Mexican destination has become synonim to quality golfing.

Nicklaus followed the success of Palmilla, with new course designs at Cabo del Sol and El Dorado. Soon, golf legendary names such as Greg Norman, Tiger Woods or Davis Love III, joined Nicklaus in making of Cabo one of the best places in the world for golf lovers.

Cabo (or Los Cabos), is a dual destination (apparently all Mexican beach towns are) consisting of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo connected by the Transpeninsular highway filled with high-end resorts (and golf courses).

A great deal of Los Cabos attractive as an international tourist hotspot is due to its stunning natural beauty, which offers a stark contrast between the desertic lands of the Baja Peninsula and the spectacular biodiversity of both, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes. The golf courses that better amplify this contrast are usually the most popular among golfers.

However, the wide array of public golf courses in Cabo is quite impressive and there is always some new challenge to take on. Actually, the prestigious Golf Magazine ranked two of Cabo's flagship golf courses (Cabo del Sol's Ocean Course, and the Dunes Course at Diamante) on its list of the Top 100 Courses in the World.

One of the important things to know about playing golf in Cabo is that some of the main courses are private or semi-private. This is because golf courses are usually key attractions in upscale residential communities and a large part of its attractiveness sits exactly on that privacy issue. Notwithstanding this, there are more than enough quality golf courses open for public in Cabo and the following are just our favorite three:

Cabo del Sol Ocean Course: With seven holes overlooking the Sea of Cortés, this course is a thing of beauty. Golf legend Jack Niclaus once called it "the best golf property I've ever seen". Enough said.

Puerto Los Cabos Golf Course: Nine holes designed by Greg Norman, nine more by Jack Nicklaus. What else can you ask for?

Cabo Real: Maybe not the most famous golf course in Cabo, although it is the only one to host two PGA Senior Grand Slam Events.
