Shimkent is renowned for its cultural significance, and it has played a part in many historical events. The city served as the capital of the White Horde during the 13th century, and during the same period, it was an important trading center and military cantonment. Shimkent also served as a major focal point of the Silk Road in centuries past, and the city was a leading center of education as early as the 9th century. Visitors to Shimkent today will find many traces of the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
