Lavender Cottage, Taichung
When travelers think of Taiwan, they usually think of places like Longshan Temple or Jiufen Old Street. When I think of Taiwan, I remember lush lavender fields, lavender ice cream, and lavender coffee because of Taichung’s Lavender Cottage.

Lavender Cottage is located in Taichung which is one of Taiwan’s major cities. To get to Taichung from Taipei, you can take the Taiwan High Speed Rail, the regular railway, or the bus. It’s an accessible city. To get to Lavender Cottage, though, you will need to hire private car or take a cab because the place is quiet secluded. You will have to traverse through narrow roads up in the hills for this gem.
When you get to Lavender Cottage, you will be welcomed by purple and lavender painted signs right at the gate. For foreigners, the entrance fee is around 150 NTD or around $5. They give you a coin that you can use as currency in the Lavender Café or in the Lavender Gift Shop. If you go over the amount of the coin, you can use the local currency to make up for the remaining amount.

Living up to its name, Lavender Cottage is located in the midst of a lavender farm. Everything about the farm is lavender. Don’t miss the Lavender Fragrance Station which is just a few steps away from the entrance. In this station, you can press a button that sprinkles lavender perfume all over you as many times as you want. You’ll end up smelling as fresh as lavender.
After being lavender-sprayed, you can hike around the farm and take photos around the dainty chic woodworks and the vast landscapes dotted by flowers. Most tourists stop by Dreamdancer Memory, a shop where you can customize postcards. You can send them to your family and friends, or you can send them back to yourself as a memento. If at this point you’re already feeling exhausted, you can relax at the Lavender Café and exchange your coin for whatever it is that they are offering.
Each coin also gets you a free bottle of lavender fizzy water wrapped in neat purple packaging. Visitors go gaga over the lavender and lemongrass ice cream and its signature lavender coffee.

The entire experience is so delightful that you will no doubt want to take souvenirs with you. The Lavender Cottage has a Lavender Gift Shop precisely for this. They sell anything lavender you can think of – from soaps, stationery, and anything else that can be infused with lavender. If you haven’t spent your coin in the café, you can spend it in the shop.
When you visit in March, you might just catch Lavender Cottage in the middle of its Lavender Festival where everything becomes more vibrant and alive.
