So the next day, we drove up high above the sea level - Day 745 #Freewrite: Monday - Prompt: sea level

in travel •  5 years ago

Our visit to Lloret de Mar was a great fix for my winter blues. Even it was not winter yet, we expected between 8 and 12 degrees Celcius in average on a good day in Paris. So when we arrived at Barcelona airport for the All Saints Holiday - just two weeks after the heated movements for Independencia de Cataluña - it was sunny and 18 degrees, oh it was summer all over again.

The drive from Barcelona Airport was easy and it took us around 1.5 hours to arrive to Lloret de Mar. We hired a lovely blue car and we quickly understood that blue is the favorite color amongst the local vehicles. We stayed in a lovely apartment just 4 mins walk to the beach and obviously I swam early first thing the next morning before driving out exploring La Costa Brava.

After passing through the neighboring village of Tossa de Mar, we gathered the courage and took thousands of dangerous curves and hundreds of very pretty yet challenging turns on the coastal road to Sant Feliu de Guixols. Well true was what they said that this hideous road was not for the faint hearted. Just after a few bends, I knew that we needed to stop and to give me time to take a breather. The road was 21 km long, perched high above sea level and clung to the clifftops overlooking the blue Mediterranean sea down below along with the hidden beaches where some were nudist paradise. The road was known as The Road of Thousand Bends.

Then after a nice and long lunch paired with delicous wine tastings at Villa Mas beach front restaurant at Sant Feliu de Guixols, we walked along the beach and decided to go to Girona, a lovely medieval city in Catalonia, located 70 m above sea level. The city has preserved its huge fortress all intact and walls in made from stones from the 1700s. We walked up through the cobbled stones and imagined that we were in another time. Also a few of the famous scenes from Game of Thrones were shot there too, one of them was in front of the Cathedral of Girona, which made this city popped up in the tourist destination list since around 2015.

Here we were with the stunning view of Girona.

Photos taken from when we were in Girona. You might wonder about the Road of Thousand Bends but I bet you know where I was and the reason why I couldn’t take any photos of it. Yes, we pulled over and I was standing on the side of the car and holding back my hair 🤓

What a beautiful city!! And I would have sweated bullets on that road. Glad that you made it safely.

Thanks! Yes, those were devilish bends 😈

It must be great to have summer back. I've the photos. I wonder if there were many tourists. Happy day and writing. 😁

Not so many visitors as it was off season and that’s why we loved it!! x

@myrockandocean I can imagine that. I try to avoid crowdy places and tourists. Happy day to both of you. 💕

I once set out to closely to dusk with too little gas to drive around Maui. It became very dark, the gas tank hung out at zero for much of the four hour drive, our greatest fear was we would run out of gas, but we made it back to our B&B.
The next day we read accounts of what we could not see on that road, and it was much like yours!

I'm here to deliver the Tuesday prompt so please write us another!

Omg, even though we plan the trip meticulously there is always something on the way which surprises us. Like travel like in life. Glad that you made it back to your apartment after all those turns and the worry of running out of gas! What a memorable holiday x

The thing is we had no idea the blackness off each of those curves was like that, all we saw was black! I am so glad we didn't know though, it was quite scary as it was.

Wow! I wouldn’t go back passing through those bends again, I don’t know about you but the view during the day must be amazing so would you try it again with daylight?

I don't know if I would, now that I know it takes four hours to get around a twenty or something mile trek.

Hmmm... Maui still make it sounds so great! x
