Hi there,

when in Copenhagen, visiting Christiania is a must.

It‘s an own free city, within the city of Copenhagen, founded in 1971.
Christiania consists of 15 areas within Christianshavn, a district of Copenhagen.

The city was made out of old barracks and part of the city wall.
The first inhabitants were homeless people, followed by hippies, people liking an alternative lifestyle and yes, drug addicts. Consuming hard drugs is forbidden in Christiania but the consumers are welcomed like everyone else.

Although the city is a free one, there are rules that forbid theft, violence and weapons. The free city has its own currency, kindergardens, health organizations, a post office, leisure activities etc., but there‘s no such thing as lease agreements or real estate property.

Most of the buildings are constructed in a very creative way – round houses, crooked walls, a lot of green, colorfully painted houses and pieces of art everywhere. You can see children play next to older people, hippies next to persons wearing suits. Really diverse and worth a visit :)

The most famous sight in Christiania is the Pusher Street, the place where people were allowed to deal with drugs (except hard ones) on the street until 2016. After a horrible event, where a policeman was shot in the head by a drug dealer, the street was closed for dealing.

Unfortunately, I don‘t have many pictures as Christiania‘s inhabitants don‘t allow you, or at least don‘t like it, to take pictures, they prefer staying private. Nontheless, I think you can get a bit of a picture of the alternative way the city looks.
