My First Windmill... (3 Months in the Netherlands!)

in travel •  7 years ago

In 2012 I lived in Holland for three months... That is as long as the European Union will allow an American to stay with no visa... I had dreams of slipping away, into a vagabond homeless european lifestyle... Luckily, I got on the plane and returned with no hassles...

While I was there I had a lot of fun... Probably, I will do an entire blog about my Amsterdam birthday, so this post will just show some other aspects of my time there... Most notably, the windmill I got to climb and explore, and the video I made about it... Here ya go...

The song is from an improvised session a year before... When I put the video together, I saw how it resembled the flavor I was going for, without distracting from the wonder of climbing my first windmill... You can still hear me clumsily laugh, as I trip on the old, wooden steps...

This picture was from a different windmill day, but it helps convey the view from outside, which I forgot to include... That is one thing I recall from my time in the Netherlands... They have their urban over in one area, and the rest is pretty rural... I rode a bicycle about 8 miles a day, to work on the project which brought me there in the city... I stayed in the suburbs, but it looked as nature as a national park... I mean, the local park had PONIES!!! I am not kidding!!

The time I spent there was from mid-January through mid-April, so it was below zero most of the time... I stayed in an attic bedroom, which was super cozy... I was pretty poor, but managed to visit the many coffeeshops to catch a buzz... I even befriended a 20-something year old Dutch guy, who taught me how to roll a spliff...

Yes, I admit that I would never wear glasses like this in public... Let's just say that in 2012, we all thought the world was going to end, so our fashion sense went out the window? LOL!

Here are some famously cool buildings in Rotterdam... I guess I enjoy photographing places I could never afford to live in?

Anyway, keep traveling! If you cannot travel, treat where you are the same as where you want to go, and it'll become interesting to me! Share a photo of where you live in the comments below, and get a free punchline from my heart...

Good to meet another traveller! I'm from Holland, but it's the one place I never felt at home in...I saw you traveled in Asia as well. Anyway, welcome to Steemit!

I was in Dordrecht... Near Rotterdam?

and thanks for the welcome!

yeah, it's quite close to Rotterdam. I'm from Tilburg, a little further South :)

very cool. I visited Denmark and Sweden years ago. Beautiful country and enjoyed the experience.

I got to visit Sweden in 1984, with my family! I was like 12 years old, and more interested in the exposed breasts on the buses and magazine stands... Gotenburg was where I went... It was beautiful!!

How was Denmark? I hear it is expensive, but they have a great quality of life... What do you think?
