So on a recent trip to Napflio, Greece

Optimized-New27IMG_20180916_120346.jpg

I was able to indulge in an orgy

of photo taking.

the Fort of the Palmidi

The fort of the Palamidi, which has been preserved in excellent condition, is one of the greatest achievements of Venetian fortification architecture.
The hill of Palamidi, which takes its name from the Homeric hero Palamidis, does not seem to have been systematically fortified until the second Venetian occupation. The construction of the fort was basically carried out during the time of Venetian General Superintendent of the Fleet, Agostino Sagredo, from 1711 to 1714, marking the fort not only as a major feat in terms of its fortifications, but also in terms of the speed with which it was constructed. The engineers Giaxich and Lasalle designed a fort that was based on a system of mutually supporting and mutually defending bastions, which are built one above the other on a east-west axis, and are connected to each other by a wall. The total of eight bastions are self contained so that if one of them was breached, the rest could continue their defence.

But do take a cab the other way.

(It is an exhausting 999 steps!)

Greetings @onceuponatime.

Lovely photographs of this Fort of the Palmidi and as you say.....what beautiful stonework.....appreciate the introduction to another beautiful part of the world.

All the best from bleujay/bentleycapital.

Cheers!

@onceuponatime,
Those stone works are really incredible and you made wonderful photography of it as well. They made it at the top of the cliff and could get a scenery of entire area as well! Anyway at the very first photography I have see a staircase which made for disable person as well! Did you noted that?

Cheers~

I can't see each photo and imagine how people of the age lived i mean the architecture talks about a strong population with interesting knowledge in create buildings. Thanks for share a piece of this world in your post

Yes, it would be very interesting to study the history of the time and the building of that Fort. The Fort changed hands several times between the Venetians and the Turks. I wonder how much blood was spilled and how many treacheries perpetrated!

I love stonework and I am a sucker for arches! The engineering from those times is just amazing

I somehow assumed that it was stoned work that was your first love :-)

Hahahahaha!!! Once upon a time perhaps it was ... boom boom!!!

Oh my goodness me, too much user name fun!

Stay out of this @twiceuponatime!!!

Spectacular views, but all i can say is with all those stairs where are the elevators.....

You can go up, or down, by taxi or bus.

20180916_131817.jpg

Going down... 999 steps with... bitshare style! 😊

Napfio looks remarkably beautiful. I need to travel and air out my brain! LOL Thanks for sharing such beautiful construction my friend.

You need to travel to air out your brain? Can't you just hang it out to dry?

Wow!!! This stonework buildings are very beautiful. Am sure this place is a good tourist site?

Excellent tourist site. You can't throw a stick without hitting two or three :-)

Yes!!!

I love stonework. It’s a very wonderful fort. The architecture at that time was awesome. The scariest thing about this post is 999 steps. It’s a heart touching place on the bank of a sea.
Sir I just want you to visit India once. And, if you are just unable to visit all the places then just visit Tajmahal and The Redfort.
I believe you will love these places.

I have been to both TajMahal and Red Fort. And many other places too. The burning ghats in Benaras for instance. And the Kutb Minar in Mehrauli outside of Delhi.

Sir the funny thing is, I have never been to Banaras, and I am inviting you.

tell me the truth you have gone up and 999 steps?????

Of course not! I went down the 999 stairs.

Wow wonderful fort. Greece and Croatia have many forts and castles and they are very historic.

I was in Croatia a little while ago, but didn't have time to tour any forts and castles. I must go back with more time!

A lot of life goes into that work. Every stone has a fingerprint.

Probably a lot of slave labor too, unfortunately.

At least they can rest easy knowing now they have respect.

We also have some forts in our country and also some in our neighboring country. You should visit Pakistan someday! It is a land of beauty. :)

I've been through the Khyber Pass a couple of times.

Wow! I am surprised to know that. Then it must be years ago?

Before your time.

Wow The fort of the Palamidi definitely reminds me of the narrow streets in Jerusalem, the way the sun sets and the view of the hill from an elevated perspective is really astounding if you ask me really, it's so brilliant, I must say you captured it's beauty in your camera

Thank you.

definitely I hope I'll get to see for myself someday

In front of this beauty I can understand the need to indulge in an orgy of photo taking! It's a fortress, right? We have a similar building in my city too, but not the same view ;)

A fortress and a prison.

Hello dear this is a humble gift for you hope you enjoy it.

Amazing fort . It made by with creativity . Nice pics taken . Thanks

Old castles used to make such a similar. It is a beautiful sample of art along with strength.

Looking at your photos of this stone work feels like traveling in time, I'm a sucker for old stone walls too. Looks like an amazing place, I wouldn't want to leave!

Greece always urges us to a photographic orgy! I've been out of there for two weeks but... I'm already thinking about the next visit.
An orgy of excellent photos, my favorites are the two with climbing up and down. Beautiful perspective!
I like stone constructions, I've seen a few in a village in the mountains of Thassos. The village is called Kastro. It cannot be compared to Napflio but it also has a church built in the 15th century with stones in the ruins of a castle built in 1400. The church is closed and has a picturesque position. I hope to live for a few more years, not to visit as many places in Greece as possible, but to live a few days in the atmosphere of the place, whatever it is.

Nafplio is my favorite city even if it is said that the climate is unhealthy. I would like to move there when i retire. You gave us a different perspective of the fort and some useful information which i didn't know to be honest and i 'm embarased for that as a Hellene..
Have a good month !

Oh I am a lover of stones too! I love stone walls. I wish our house was built of the stuff, we have enough on our beach to do so, but I'm not going to haul them up here ;) Though our fireplace and outside chimney is covered in local stone.

This would be a dream to me, all this. Really the stone and solidity of the EU always gets me. It has so much more permanence and feels more 'grounded' then the US where we tear things down. At least in my area of New England we keep most of our old city Boston together, but still they tear out old things all the time to replace with glass and steel :/

I have never been to Greece and dream of taking a little stone house perched above a blue sea to paint all morning and bike to a village to sip wine dark coffees and people watch...some day :)

beautiful stone walls and the view from the top can't get over it so nice :D

I would love to go to Greece, in my city they tear down buildings from 20th century, call them old, I like going to places where "old" is thousands of years old

@onceupoanatime, Seriously I loved Fort of the Palmidi's architecture technology and stone work. It's looks like Galle Dutch Fort in my country. Some of same things match both forts.

You will have to visit Saint Augustine FL and see the fort made from fossilized sea shells. It's called Coquina. And the cannon balls would not break the stone, it would absorb them. Pretty cool.

Beautiful shots of a beautiful area. Thanks for sharing @onceuponatime. Going down those stairs was a sight to behold :)

I been a lot of time in Greece, wonderful places, I miss this one!
I like a lot this kind of buildings...and ouzo too! Eheheheh
Your photo orgy is really nice, good shots!👏✌️

Such a beautiful artwork with stones . Amazing place .

Ah, that's fantastic. It's magic to stand in a place where others have stood for centuries.

Exceptional stonework, the views from the top are stunning - although 999 steps seems like it might be easier getting a taxi to the top and walking down!

The busy narrow streets of the city have a real rustic charm, Napflio looks like somewhere I would definitely like to visit.

Very nice! Thank you.
Those stone walks and steps are just amazing!
Greece is full of surprises and many gods!

You are very fit to climb up all those steps!!
That’s because you go to the gym!

Cheers.

Indeed, quite a photogenic place! I admire that type of precision and design a great deal; there was even a time when I felt I might become a stonemason... rather to my mother's chagrin; she had visions of "My son, the doctor," which never came about.

Of course, I didn't end up a stonemason, either... but I always enjoyed building stone walls in the yard.

I was able to indulge in an orgy

lol nice one. Great shots, Greece is always amazing.
