Last night a special event took place in Wuerzburgs four biggest wineries: die "Nacht der offenen Weinkeller" - Night of the open wine cellars. Every year around the end of November Wuerzburgs habitants and visitors celebrating a huge wineparty between walls full of historiy and barrels full of wine.
We are in the middle of a traditional wine region. Not so many people may have heard about this. There are more famous wine growing areas in the world. Yet also the german poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) orderd his wine from Wuerzburgs famous wine yard "Wuerzburger Stein".
Actually it was intended for the visitors to stroll from one cellar to another and stay where they like it best, but this is impossible anymore. So many people want to get inside, the waiting lines are so long that it is illusory to switch locations. They let around 800 people in. The others have to wait in the line and in the cold November air for two hours or so hoping some people may leave and make space for them ... I estimate that more than 1000 people were waiting outside additionaly! My advice is: be early and stay where you are! It is beautiful in every of these four locations anyway.
We choose the Staatlicher Hofkeller. For those who know Wuerzburg: it is right under the historical Wuerzburg Residence. The three other locations are Weingut am Stein, Weingut Bürgerspital zum Hl. Geist and the Weingut Juliusspital. You can watch the whole cellar, walk between huge barrels, try several different wines and seccos, eat snacks with the wine and listen to music. In our location a folk music group played traditional folk music and Blues Band made the people dance.
I hope you enjoyed to come with me on this beautiful wine event and have the chance to do it for real on your next trip to Europe/Germany/Wuerzburg. 🍷🍷

This looks and sounds like a lot of fun. Does everyone eventually get in or do some go away disappointed?

Unfortunately not everyone gets in. Or maybe only if they are patient enough in the last hour when many people already want to go home. It opens from five in the afternoon until high noon. There was still a long line of people waiting when we had enough (wine 😎) and went back home ...
