Dubai is known for its center of commerce that was already quite well established by the late 19th Century with its souks drawing attention of traders all over the world.

While the modern city thrives with indoor malls, the traditional Arabian markets are still a crucial part of their daily life and trade.

Experience Dubai Arabian Souks Vibrant Marketplaces

Take a day to wander through the city's Bustling Souks to experience a bit of the Arabian culture. There are 4 types of Souks:

1. The Gold Souk
2. The Spice Souk
3. The Perfume Souk
4. The Textile Souk

The Gold Souk

The Gold Souk is the most popular Souk, thus Dubai is often called "City of Gold".

Located in Deira, the souk has covered walkways that are lined up with about three hundred jewellery shops.

Here, you see a dazzling array of necklaces, bracelets, rings, gold, silver, and precious stones.

Gold is sold by weight based on the international gold rates. This place is alive with lots of tradesmen and artists doing Arabic designs for tourists with prices that aren't set in stone.

The Spice Souk

The Spice Souk is situated in the narrow alleyways selling dried fruits, frankincense, herbs and spices such as: cloves, cinnamon, saffron, cardamom, sumac, coriander and nutmeg. These are imported from Iran, India and Pakistan.

We bought some of these to take home to our friends and family. See how happy the man in the middle there looks waving to us from his shop.

Perfume Souk

The Perfume Souk is situated on the Sikkat Al Khail Road, east of the Gold Souk. Here, you find international and Arabic perfumes with ornate, jars, gem encrusted bottles and incense.

The Textile Souk

The Textile Souk is in in Bur Dubai. The bustling bazaar here offers a variety of textiles, carpets, cotton and wool fabrics.

There are lots of shoes, slippers, garments and souvenirs.

Look at how "eager" these shopkeepers are in wanting you to buy from them! We don't dare to walk into these shops.
