A typical sight when I'm grocery shopping in Dalian, one of China's best known seafood cities.
This is at one of the biggest supermarkets in Dalian, it has everything from clothes, work supplies, phones and of course a huge food section. There are many markets like it in China, this is just the one I like to go to most often. They've got a lot imported staples for my kitchen that are easy to get at.
Once you get to the grocery department the fresh fish section is first. You can't get to any of the other food without first passing this spot. As mentioned Dalian is well known for seafood it being a coastal city, fresh fish can come to port year round making it easy to get a variety of live or super fresh seafood.
These fat bull frogs obviously are not seafood but they do fit into the live fish category I suppose. Frog isn't so bad if it's cooked right. Too many bones for me to really get interested but there a few popular restaurants here specializing in this delicacy.
Sting Rays with their spiky tail still included, the best part I'm sure.
And one thing I am surprised to have not yet tried is the soft shelled turtle. These like the frogs are farmed nearby rather than caught in the wild like much of what's here. I've mentioned before I'll try anything served to me and this just hasn't come up yet, or maybe ever, I'm truly not worried. haha
Let's not miss out on the variety of shell fish. Also probably farmed. From black mussels, to clams and some other shapes that I'm not sure their English name of at the moment. I have eaten all of these and would eat them all again.
Some small crabs that most people in the west wouldn't eat as they don't have much meat in them for the amount of work to get a morsel of a bite out of. I've also eaten each of these and they do taste delicious as they're usually fried in some type of sauce or spices. They don't do the straight up boil and drench in melted butter like I am used to.
You must eat a balanced diet and include vegetables. One type of seaweed just isn't enough to get all your dietary needs covered, plus the different textures and flavours, a different seaweed for each dish.
And there you have it. A trip by the fish market. If you really love fish and seafood Dalian is the place to get it. Almost every restaurant has some thing live or fresh even if it's not their thing. Some of the most popular and expensive restaurants specialize in seafood. One I went to had live Alligator and fresh Kangaroo tail. I will show you those photos in a future post.
Must eat your vegatables
..and then you mention seaweed.
ya know.
I never thought of that!
Izzit really? Can you get a balanced diet off of stuff grown in the ocean?

Surprisingly yes... except for amino acids and vitamin C. Need fruits for Vit. C most often. You do need to eat lots of other foods but seaweed in general hold almost all of mineral and vitamin needs. You might remember my Spirulina and alga posts regarding diet. Alga, which seaweed is an incredible close relative of, hold large amounts of nutrients, but not some of the most important.
In Japan the say eating seaweed prevents hair loss and some of the oldest living people in Japan, which is also the world, swear that seaweed is key longevity. Best to take it like a pill, small bites followed with water, or the actual capsules they make. I don't find it so bad in salad with vinegar dressing or cooked in a stewed with meat.

Vitamin C is key, agreed, in just a couple weeks with a deficiency can bring many health problems, even death. Luckily things grow with it everywhere; best to figure out what in your climate has it most. In northern Canada Goose Berries last on the stem in -20C weather, so all year it's available. Just gotta fight small birds for them. lol

Turtle is very tasty. I used to eat during my childhood days. There was a small connectivity from river to our pond. While coming from that connectivity, turtle used to get caught by our catching instruments. But now it is banned in India for eating. Turtle became rare in India and that's why government has taken that step. As it's not banned in China definitely go for eating it. It must be super tasty if the cooking is proper.

Well, It's not banned here because they farm the soft shelled turtles, so there's a big supply also culturally speaking China doesn't seem to worried about saving the wildlife of this planet, some people of course do but generally speaking...
Anyways i will try it someday.

Well, it's not good for your health if you eat too much, like anything else. But with radiation from Japans reactors, seafood it less healthy than before. With all good comes bad. Balance of nature, then enters man and his method.
Most articles I've read agree, seafood a couple times a week is till better than none.

Every time I am more impressed by what can be a plate of common food in China. A frog? No doubt I would never imagine eating it, in this part of the world, no one would think of eating a frog.

Wow! That's a lot of fresh seafoods! But I think the fishes aren't happy with the bullfrogs joining them in one aquarium lol. I have tried frog once, it's marinated and spicy then was deep fried, it tastes just like chicken wings to me, yes not bad really when it's cooked properly, just like the bats I had too, in my country it's cooked in adobo style (mainly with vinegar, garlic, soy sauce, Ginger and chilli, pepper). My father loves exotic foods, so I had tried some :-) I just don't like the snake and alligator, I don't know lol! But I had tried some eels too cooked in coconut milk with spice, that was also good!
There's a famous vlogger in Youtube, where he featured some exotic foods in Guangzhou China, he had Geoduck, snake and sea cucumber for $250 worth meal.

A lot of sea cucumber in China comes from Dalian, no joke, many shops specialize in it. That aside adobo style anything is truly a PH dish, Adobo fish, squid, chicken and more were all available. I tried adobo squid was not impressed with the squid though the flavour was truly unique. Adobo anything must be delicious.

Cool! I never had sea cucumber before though. I might like to try that oneday! Some fish and squid here are also best to eat raw or grilled. There's a PH dish we call "Kinilaw"
For Kinilaw fish it usually comes with vinegar and/or citrus juices, mixed with tomatoes, onion, ginger, cucumber and coconut milk, then if you want it spicey you can some chilli pepper too.
For squid, I like it better being grilled or just simply cut it into bite size and dip it in vinegar with chilli and onions. Fresh squid has a unique sweet taste that I really like, and it can change when it's overcooked, that's why I much prefer taking it raw. Gosh, this post makes me hungry. 😄
