Fractured History- Chiang Kai-Shek Arrival in Taiwan

in travel •  7 years ago

This is a memorial to Chiang Kai-Shek's arrival in Taiwan. He actually flew to Taiwan after he and his troops were surrounded by Japanese troops in Chengdu, China. The pose of prayer is also romantisized as, according to his wife's diary, be became 'Christian' after his mother-in-law shamed him into assuming the western religion to promote relations with western powers, long after his arrival in Taiwan. During this period, Chiang had been an intermediary between the Triad and the west, who were trying to develop China as an opium colony. (That's what the boxer rebellion was about.) The memorial is in Tamshui, Taiwan where the Tamshui River meets the China Sea.fracturedHistory.jpg
