Minimizing The Digital Nomad Lifestyle & Figuring Out What Works.

One of my goals for this year was to figure out a system to live, work and play from the road off the back of my motorcycle. After my first test run two weeks ago in Allegheny, I realized my system for internet just wasn't working for me. I got out in the wilderness and discovered that I had internet on my phone but for some reason when I tried to tether my laptop to the phone the connection was intolerably slow!

Trading from the laptop wouldn't even be a consideration. I also tried a blog post, tweeting, and some other social networking. Tweeting was possible but everything else was cumbersome to say the least. Strangely enough my phone connection to the internet worked fairly well. I was able to tweet, scroll through social media, reply to posts, and chat with people over my direct phone connection.

Another issue I realized immediately was the amount of tech, cables, and other stuff I had to bring with me. How could I minimize all this, and still manage my workflow? I was working off a Chromebook, and my Android device isn't much different, why not replace the Chromebook with my phone all together. I started researching ways to do this, and decided on a bluetooth keyboard.

Utilizing a bluetooth keyboard I can use my Android device just like my Chromebook. I can create blog posts, reply to emails & social media posts, and the final test will be trading from the phone. From a security standpoint I'm not crazy about that idea, but as usual, convenience and ease of use may outweigh security.

I guess my end goal is to try and minimize as much extra tech as possible. Less cables, and bulky devices and end up with a phone, keyboard, and basic charging system that works for me.

My final test for this will probably be in the next couple weeks. I was planning on another test run this weekend, but I seem to be stranded in the middle of extreme weather. I had 3 local destinations I was planning on and all three have seen extreme rain and flooding. Why deal with those elements if I don't have too?

Here it is out of the box. The keyboard folds up, charges by USB and connects via Bluetooth. There is a small stand to rest the phone on. Pretty basic, yet functional. Hoping this is the final solution for my travel tech.

This is great how you are testing out the system. That is what a good explorer does.

Thanks, it's been fun learning about all this stuff too.

A folding keyboard and a phone seems like the most portable solution and can probably manage 90% of what you need. I've not got a bluetooth keyboard yet

I'm happy I made the purchase. Seems like a good solution so far. I'm going to play with it a bunch over the weekend and for the most part I'm pretty confident I can get my phone to do everything I'm doing currently with my Chromebook. As long as I can blog, social network and place the occasional trade, I should be all good.

Have you wrote this post on your phone already? I'm wondering about the screen size. You do gain a bit by getting rid of onscreen keyboard but the screen size is still tiny. It might have a discouraging effect when trying to deal with large volumes of text (for example writing something that is few pages long).

Maybe a tablet + 4g SIM? Who needs a phone number these days anyway ;p
