The One Question That Makes Any Conversation 10 Times More Interesting

in travel •  9 years ago  (edited)

All of us will probably meet thousands of people in our life. Although it happens on a daily basis, it looks like it’s always the same game whenever you meet someone for the first time. Always the same questions.

  • What’s your name?
  • Where are you from?
  • What’s your job?

And that’s it, basically.

We could have this written on a card and give it to people, it wouldn’t make any kind of difference. Really.

When I crossed USA on a bicycle, I‘ve met people asking me for something totally different though.

Ok, I had a huge 60kg bike and a sign behind saying that I was traveling with it, but still.

Instead of asking for the casual basic shit, they would sometimes ask me:
“What’s your story?”

Well, it made sense for them to ask to a traveler, because you usually think that a traveler has great stories to share.
After I replied and shared more about me, I would ask them: “What’s yours?”

Then I asked to myself: what if I applied that with each person I meet?

Don’t even trust me when I tell you how amazing the answers became compared to the usual social questions (plus no one even really pay attention to those answers anyway).

Don’t even trust me, but please, try it yourself instead. It’s so easy to do, and the person you’ll be talking to will be for sure positively surprised by the question. And you’ll be surprised by the answers.

If you can change the level of interest of any kind of conversation by simply asking one question,
why not giving it a try right now?
