Driving around Iceland - A story in pictures #3 Driving to the Game Of Thrones Caves

in travel •  8 years ago  (edited)

Though not necessary, to catchup on the journey till now, you can see Part 1  Part 2

By end of part 2, we were here:

The view from our apartment:

After walking inside the ice caves and watching the northern lights, Iceland now needed something very special to awe us. We had already started feeling the contentment that we had gotten the worth out of bucks. On a nice sunny morning the terrain started like this

We even stopped to say hello to the Icelandic horses.

We must have driven about 30 Km and all of sudden we were driving through  nothing but snow fields on both sides and the car thermometer signalling -14 Degree C.

Some more driving and we were back  next to the coast. The change of the terrain and weather in a short span was so drastic that one starts to feel humbled by the nature's creativity.

Finally we reached our base for the night in Myvatn and we start looking for places to stay. Myvatn looks just like moon, with craters appearing on the either side of the road.

We finally found a nice cottage by the lake Myvatn. The owner of the cottage told us that there is a natural hot water cave nearby where Game of Thrones was shot, so we rushed to our car and started on the route he had marked for us on the map. After quite a bit of off road driving we finally reached there.

Oh man - Iceland rocks! I love this :)

Iceland definitelty rocks @raymondspeaks

Awesome.

I'm heading over in September. I can't wait!!!

hope you have a fun trip

It blows my mind how there are very few trees in Iceland. But in Scandinavia there are a lot of tress.

Never noticed until you said it. What is more wierd is that Iceland is amazingly green in summers with so few trees.

need to drive carefull, the road is look dangerous because its winter
@politicasan2

@politicasan2 It was actually quite ok, we had no prior experience of driving in snow, but faced no issues as at all, winter tires are compulsory by law

WOW! What a great shots you have here from your trip! Keep them coming please.

thanks! will try to post more

Visiting Iceland in winter must be cold cold cold. I think I get enough of that in the winter, maybe I'll plan a visit during the summer! Great pics, thanks for sharing them!

It's pretty cold and snow storms are very regular, while in Summer the colours are Iceland are amazing

I always admired that, how people can dive in such difficult conditions.

Any photos of the dive itself? Should be cool.

There's a video of a drive in this post, I am in a process of making a short video of highlights of the drive, I will share soon.

Beautiful pictures.
A few questions:
Where are you from?
How long did the trip around Iceland take you guys?
Was the decision to go in winter conscious, or did you spontaneously take this trip?

@daut44
thanks,
I am from India, the trip we took was for 7 days, of which we spent 2 days in Reykjavik.
We had been to Iceland in summer and loved it, and wondered, how it would look in winters. But the major driving force was Northern lights, there is a high probability to spot them in winters. And we did for 3 nights :)
