Real Life Captured #98: Piura Peru! Part One (14 photos)

in travel •  7 years ago

Hey there my Steemit friends! Welcome to Piura Peru. The capital city of the northern most Peruvian province. It only has a population of about 400,000. I had to look this up just now as the taxi driver on the way to the airport told me the population was only 30,000! Which I almost falsely wrote just now.

One thing you will learn with any short trip in South America communication is an issue. Culturally people just tell you what ever they feel like as if it's fact. The word I don't know almost never comes out of someone's mouth. They'll just tell you whatever, off the top of their head instead of say "Yo no se", "I don't know". Really makes things difficult at times. Especially when asking for directions.

One time in Ecuador I was given wrong directions and I ended up mountain biking six hours up over a mountain instead of the one hour rout that would have just gone around it. So you can never be too careful checking, double checking, and even triple checking information given to you in this part of the world. But that's for another article isn't? Now let's have a look around this city of about 400,000 people of Piura Peru!

With over 11 years of travel experience I answer travel and international lifestyle questions. Leave a question in the comments and I may make a Steemit post just for you!

Hahaha, I know way too well what you are talking about Dan :D Happened to me many times too. Local people saying completely random stuff and misinformation :D While looking at you and smiling :) Double and triple checking is indeed necessary sometimes :) Still in Santiago my friend?

Not so often I find people that can totally relate, so it's pleasure conversing with you my friend. Just left Santiago and arrived in Montevideo Uruguay two nights ago. So far I'm really liking Uruguay, has a very western/ European feel. I'm due for that change :)

Haha, I am happy to have found another traveler with same experiences and opinions on so many things :) Glad you have been enjoying Uruguay so far! Keep up the fun amigo :)

I'm guessing you don't know about the 2 cent earnings threshold. .01 sbd posts do not get paid out. FYI. You can upvote this post though because I can make it count. lol

I’m yet to travel in South America, but that year will come and when it does, I know it won’t be a disappointing one.

As I’ve travelled, I’ve found that a lack of ”yo no se” is certainly not peculiar to Peru, or even South America. Folks really don’t want to disappoint you, so they'll often tell you what they think you want to hear, or in the case of populations, just invent something to make you gasp in surprise.

So, when you ride into the remote village and ask “is this the way to Irkutsk?”, a nod and a smile will usually be followed by a ”Yes”.
However, if you'd asked the same helpful individual a slightly different question; ”which way would you travel to Irkutsk?” he or she will often times smile and point back in the direction from which you’ve just ridden.

It's a funny old world, but it's things like this that make it, usually after the event, also wonderfully adorable.

Thanks for sharing ….. Geoff @poorcirculation

So very true. This why I'm always checking double check. Happy to meet other people here who've had similar experiences and know what I'm talking about. Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you again soon! -Dan

Hola,
Looks like starting a small table businesses are easy to start in Peru?
Not too much red tape or rules n licensses required like in U.S.A.

I would have to agree totally! Thanks for stopping by!

outstanding!!

Yeah asking for directions can be a challenge on trip especially when you're in a place where not everyone or very few people speaks English unless you know their local language.

Very true! Thanks for taking the time to comment :)
