5 of the most amazing castles in Europe

Yesterday on Travelfeed I shared some of the churches and cathedrals we came across during our travel in Europe. It seemed fitting to share some of the castles I have come across today. What is great about castles is that they often have a rich history and tales of epic battles and many changes of ownership. And they also look amazing!

Guimarães castle - Portugal

The reason I am sharing this castle first is because it is what I would have imagined castles looked like before seeing any. The stone walls and pointy tops look like something out of a movie to me! Guimaraes castle is thought to have been established around the 10th century.

Having visited many castles ow, I have learnt that they are quite strategic in the way they are built, often at the top of hills as a point of lookout for oncoming attacks from enemies.

We paid the small fee to enter the castle, and although it wasnt mindblowing it did give you an idea of how battles might have taken place, and how people might have prepared.

Krzyztopor castle - Poland

Krzyztopor castle is a fairly unknown castle to tourists - we were the only visitors when we arrived! This is amazing as it gives time to full explore and imagine how the castle would have come to be. It is expected that the castle was built in the 17th century.

This castle was truly epic, and as you can see the design is quite a bit different to some of the other castles we visited. We werent able to get to much information about this one as we dont speak Polish.

Wow!

This didnt stop us from exploring the many, many rooms and areas in this castle - it was massive! One of the biggest I have visited. There were many different chambers leading to different areas, some of which seemed to lead underground.

Its getting dark down here...

Amazing!

Conwy Castle - Wales

We didnt go inside this one, but it deserves a mention as it was amazing from the outside! We came across this one by chance actually and it was quite an incredible sight.

Edinburgh Castle - Scotland

Edinburgh was an amazing and vibrant city (I will share the details in a future post!), and the castle has a real looming feel about it - looking out at the city folk from above.

It was really cool to see a castle in one of the major cities, and it shows how important the building might have been when it was established.

Litchenstein castle - Germany

No list of castles would be complete without one from Germany! They have loads of castles and they are all quite grand and unique. Often the castles are more 'fairytale' looking, and Lichenstein castle is no different!

Litchenstein castle!

How amazing and unique is this! A castle that is literally on the side of a cliff! I dont think I would feel safe living in this one, but they must have some amazing views and good vantage points for oncoming attackers.

Litchenstein castle!

Much like it is with churches, with castles in Europe there are probably thousand, and there are just a few that I thought were special and unique.

Glad you mentioned Krzyżtopór. I love it and I think it deserves much more attention than it gets. BTW it is pronunced [kʂɨʂˈtɔpur], tough isn't it? But it is not a castle strictly speaking. It was just a palace and had no military function at all. It's good to learn about other places worth visiting in this area because it is full of ancient Polish monuments. This area was the stronghold of Polish nobility and plenty of the most important members of Sejm - Polish parliament in 16th and 17th century came from here.
