The Old Dog Presents: Tree Tuesday, Does it Hurt? 10 Steem in Prizes!

in treetuesday •  7 years ago  (edited)

We've all seen gnarly looking trees or trees with some type of growth on them. This tree though, took the term "gnarly growth" to a new extreme!

I saw this particular specimen last October when @lellabird60 and I visited the Barolo wine area in Northern Italy.

I wasn't exaggerating was I? That's one massive growth!

Here are a couple of more views of the same tree. Do you find it ugly, interesting or beautiful?

This Massive Growth is Known as a Burr or Burl

Although considered by many to be unsightly, burls do not generally cause harm to the tree. It is assumed that they are formed because of some form of stress which could be caused by any of the following:

  • fungi
  • bacteria
  • viruses
  • insect activity
  • animal activity
  • weather
  • human damage

Whatever the explanation for this particular Burl it is, without a doubt, the biggest one I have ever seen!

The Value of Burls

Way back when I worked as a furniture designer and cabinet maker the most expensive and beautiful wood that we used was burled.

The British nature writer once referred to Burls as "like pearls in oysters". Just as a grain of sand in an oyster causes a valuable pearl to be formed so some type of stress within the tree causes a valuable burl to be formed!

Look at the Beautiful Patterns That These Burls Produce!

Above are some examples of what the wood looks like inside of a burl. Rare and precious!  Image Credit

Here's a jewellery/music box made with burled wood! So beautiful and precious! Photo from pixabay.com

Have You Seen a Tree With a Burl or Something Made From Burled Wood?

If you have I'd like to see them and there are 10 Steem in rewards up for grabs!

Let's have some fun. Here are the rules for this contest:

  • Submit a picture of a burl on a tree or something made with burled wood. You can make a post using the tag #burled and I'll try to visit it but the photo must also be included in the comments below!
  • IMPORTANT: There must be a person in the photo (you or a friend) and the person must be holding a "sign" with the Steem logo (hand drawn or otherwise).
  • You can submit entries up until this post "expires" in 7 days

I really look forward to seeing burled trees and wood from your area of the world!

I hope that you enjoyed this article: "Tree Tuesday, Does it Hurt? 10 Steem Prize!"

For the love of God I should enter. LOL On a more serious note. I was scammed Friday. They took 663.843 SBD and 21.641 token. They also spammed my comments and used up my bandwidth so my upvote is worthless. I have written two blogs on it. You can read all about it. I am sorry I cannot give you an upvote now but will when I get my power back. Thanks @kus-knee Blessings - Troy.

Wow I'm really sorry to read this. I'll try my best to help you earn it back. This post is important for security.

Yes, that's a burl. No logo or person though :(

@kus-knee I did the tree fingers to represent the steem logo in one of my burled tree photos in my blogpost.

Thank you so much my dear friend. I have gone through so many emotions from this - tears anger, depression etc. I will probably write more blogs on it to keep it alive and educate others so they are not scammed. Blessings my friend @kus-knee - Troy

God damn these scammers, let them lose more than they have stolen and let them learn a lesson. KARMA.

Very beautiful! Thanks so much for sending this to me!!!!

Good job and cute little girl!

Thank you so much @kus-knee. She is my daughter. Clicked these pictures in the morning on the way to her school. For that we need to leave early. She liked it. Thanks for your support.

I think you meant "Barolo wine" and not "Borolo". I took this pic bellow into the Hyde Park - London two months ago, and I did a post. It's so very interesting to know about that. For me it is not important to participate the contest, and I refuse to receive any reward for this photo. There isn't better or worst in my opinion, but distinct things, and all should receive for it. Unfortunately Steemit has become the social network of contests, witnesses, and bots. );

Very cool picture and thanks for the Barolo heads up. I fixed it!

Thank you...for nothing. (;

Thanks to you, I now know the name of these bizarre outgrowths on the trees. This is a birch cap. My grandmother kept a lot of vases and candy mats made of wood)

I have to share these photos with you. I know there are more of them than the conditions of the contest allow. So I do not take part in the competition, I just share photos with you)

Really lovely photos and memories. Thanks. I wish that you would put a Steemit sign to make it official!

Oh, sorry, I did not read these rules. These are old photographs. But I will make signs next time!

I know that you are the master of photo shop and so you can "fix" one and enter it!

I thought the tree was pregnant,...... so thanks for this clear informative post.

Haha good one!

I live up in the mountain , and I guess its burl hunting time. 😁😁😁

Oh yes!!!
I love burly.
that is really quite an AMAZING tree.
Haven't seen anything quite that dramatic....seriously!!!
Here is a waddy nob for you @kus-knee!!

That's a beauty!!!!!!! Thanks!

Hola! mi presentación de "Burls"para tu concurso. Interesante tu post, no sabía que este tipo de deformación en los árboles lo llamaban de esta forma. Por eso es bueno leer, todos los días se aprende algo nuevo. Gracias! =)

Well done @roelvi! You followed the rules and and you've got a good chance!

Thank you! happy to be able to participate.

Che bello! Sembra un nido d' api :-D

Vero!

No burls to submit...just wanted to say that @oldtimer 's post pointed me in your direction. I'll have to enter one of your contests!

Thanks for coming and having a look. Maybe this one would be easier for you to enter.

I saw them around but I didn't know how and why they formed. I didn't know it's even something so important for some industries, it's very singular! Hope to found one in the next 7 days XD

Yes you can make beautiful things from it!

made the photo last year - no steemit logo so no contest entry but just to share : this tree is one big burl!

https://steemit.com/nature/@artofwisdom/that-tree-is-oldschool

Very nice example!

I Have a couple off bur wood pots. Is this that wood?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I would think so. Why not take a picture and send it in?

I will asap :)

Sorry forgot we boxed up a few things as we got rid of one of our cabinets. I'll try and fish them out. :(

The cool thing is that it looks like once the stress was over, it just resumed being a normal tree...or at least it didnt seem to affect the higher parts any.

Yes other than the beer belly it looked 100% normal!

Hi,here is my entry @kus-knee. Thanks for this contest.

Very cool! Grazie, vado a vedere il tuo articolo adesso!

In my parents house, lol now my brothers, we have a saloon table made of a wood they called polished NUT ROOT, I always thought it was the root of a (never asked myself whitch) NUT tree. But looks like one of your pictures. You as furnuture maker :-) :-o do you know it is of a nut tree, or they call a table made of growth a nut root. Did my parents understand wrong? has it got to be knot tree? I will have to search for a good picture to take. Maybe it is time to go for walks ...

I'm not sure what the answer is. Perhaps it's burled wood from a nut tree. Is it dark wood? One of the most beautiful is burled walnut which is very dark!

It is not as dark as Veerles pots, it is more a darker honey colour a bit darker than your examples. I do not know when I will be there but will take a picture, for now, I want to know ! :-)

Good one. Thanks!

Hello steemians, thanks @kus-knee for your unique contests that encourage us to see more around us and find things that we had not noticed before. here my participation:

I really do not know what tree it is, it is only 1 block from my house and the neighbors have cut it many times and it comes back to sprout like nothing.

Thanks so much!

Growth in a deformed manner is know as Burr or Burl which is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Generally we think that this wood have no value. But they are valuable. Bruled wood are awesome.....

My husband also works with a tree. Processing such a tree causes some difficulties, but the result is wonderful!DSCN3251.JPG

Funny, I have never heard of a tree getting cancer, and subsequently dying from it. Maybe the gene resistant to cancer is in the genetic code of these trees? These can literally grow with the growths for years.

Wow ......!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing tree...
I never saw this tree....
Thanks for showing us a wonder tree....@kus-knee

Every thing in the nature has some benefits and is beautiful as these trees are the part of nature and their growth is although not in regular pattern but they have amny benifits and we can make different stylish things

This post change my view of seeing the blurred trees, before reading this post I feel these are cursed tree's. I found these trees are very ugly.
But after reading your post I know the value of these tree. Thanks for sharing @kus-knee.
God bless you.

This shouldn't be hard. Expect mine soon sir.

The tree is important in our lives.

Thanks for your education and trees @kus-knee. I have always been fascinated with trees however with your education I'm having much more insight on them.

I have always thought that burled wood was ugly in its natural habitat😏
Never had a clue that it could be crafted and created in such beautiful articles!

Thanks for the great pics!

This great photography ...i appreciate your contest thanks for sharing thisbusy..

omg i have never seen something like this before :O

Wow yet another contest . This also seems pretty easy. The only challenge would be seeing the tree. I have to go deep into the Forest then...lemme get my camping kit ready. Wish me luck.

That's amazing @kus-knee. Didn't know fungi could produce such quality..

love to see this pic......just awsome..

Well buddy liked the idea of yours ,Will be looking out for the Burr in trees !

Hope will get one at the end ;)

Till then will be looking for the comment section for some very nice entries !

I will go tree hunting today👍😎♨

Wow!!!!!

Awesome information. I used to think it was some sort of tree cancer. Didnt realise it was useful either. I have seen many trees like this, though not as impressive. No photos though sadly.

It is time to go hunting for something burly woods...

This is really incredible dear friend @ kus-knee, I must admit that I did not know this inside the tree as the wood is put, thank you very much for transmitting this knowledge.
I wish you a wonderful day

Wow! A burl that size would bring a nice chunk of change!

Great trees hope i can see one for real. 😊

Congratulation @lellabird60

i will post this. see if I've posted

IMG20180305170338.jpg

Wow..that's really some unusual but interesting in the same time, tree. :)

this was very unusual stuff to see

Que belleza lo que se logra con esta madera. Espero que todos los ebanistas trabajen esta madera una vez que el árbol muera por causas naturales y no por la tala indiscrimanada que acaba con selvas y bosques del planeta.

Hi @kus-knee! Please see my post "Tree Tuesday and my gorodets painting"... https://steemit.com/treetuesday/@marymik23/tree-tuesday-and-my-gorodets-painting

It is good to know that it does not cause damage in the tree, because it is a bit disturbing !! humans associate malformations with pain. this tree is the vegetable verum of the elephant man. thanks for sharing.

this is super incredible..the post must surely be trendy,,beautiful photo there

amazing tree

thank you so much for share with us

Very Amazing tree.

Such an amazing work.so you say that this is caused to fungus or something.they are such a old tress are these from your place.

@kus-knee Someone said that "Every ugly thing has a beauty. If you can find it." Most of the peoples will claim that This is Ugly. But, I think it's a beauty. The Burl is a beauty of a TREE. As you posted some pictures about furnitures of burl. So, this is the beauty of Burl of a Tree. I don't know what people say about that. I just place my opinion. My face is ugly. There are so many people who call me as a Fatty man. But I don't think that I am ugly. I am Fat. That's okay to me. Hope, people will understand that every ugly things has a beauty. Be positive and love every creation of GOD.
