PAPER WASP NEST

After coming off of a trail at Connectquot State Park I spied this complete football size Paper Wasp nest. The tree I think it was a young Black Tupelo. The leaves had already begin falling to make the nest easily spotted.

There are 22 species of wasps in North America and about 700 world wide. Most living in the tropics of the Western Hemisphere. Unlike bees, yellow jackets and hornets Wasps will only attack humans when their nest is threatened. Their sting is formidable and unlike bees can sting repetitively.

Before destroying these nest when you find them, think on this. Almost every pest insect to man is preyed upon by a wasp species for food or as a host for it's parasitic larvae.

Say hello to our little friends

I had one of them in my maple tree last year, it was a fairly good size. I see the wasps around the gardens all the time, thank goodness they leave me alone.

Very beneficial for killing garden pests.
