Caste System in India: A Curse of the Nation
India is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. But in spite of this diversity, there are many who still live in poverty, illiteracy, and lack access to clean water. One of the major social problems faced by India today is that of caste discrimination. It has been estimated that over 1 billion people in India are discriminated because of their caste. This discrimination can be seen not only in rural villages but also in urban cities like Mumbai where people are discriminated against based on their birthplace or because they belong to lower castes.
What is caste?
In the Hindu religion, the caste system is used to help sort individuals based on what their caste was in ancient times. In early Hindu society, there were seven groups called varnas. These groups represented the roles an individual could play in society – the Brahmin were the priests, the Kshatriya were the warriors, the Vaishya were the merchants, the Shudra were the artisans, the Sudras were the laborers, and the Dalits were the untouchables. The modern caste system evolved out of this ancient system. The division of society into different groups was only made possible by people who were too weak to help themselves, and so they were forced to depend on the help of others to survive.
How does caste affect India?
Caste system in India affects every section of the society, and it is the root cause of all problems in the country, including unemployment and high literacy rate. In rural areas, the discrimination is relatively limited as other castes prefer to marry within their own castes. But in the cities, there is a very high rate of caste discrimination, especially among the economically and socially marginalized groups like laborers, labourers, farmers, garment factory workers, etc. Social discrimination in urban India has been reduced to a great extent as Indians from low castes have achieved professional success and worked in various industries like banking, medicine, law, journalism, etc. But in the rural parts of the country, such non-trivial achievements are still few and far between.
