Sometimes it's difficult to define what makes a good Steemit post.
The dollar amount is an indicator that is taken into account by the "hot" and "trending" tabs; however, many times it is common for these posts to have more upvotes than actual views. This is something some Steemit users have indicated is problematic. @piedpiper and @mrs.steemit addressed this a few months ago.
I appreciate any and all upvotes that help me earn Steem, but yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to see the view count on my interview with John Goehrke much higher than the number of upvotes. This, to me, is an indication of many people reading the content who aren't Steemit users.
In fact, there were more views on that "20 questions" interview than there are in the Top 4 Trending stories combined right now!
As of this morning, here are the Top 4 Trending articles:
Here are the view counts for each...
All of these combine for a grand total of 496 views.
My "20 questions" interview, which was posted about 30 hours ago, currently has 510 views!
As I've mentioned before, I'm a big believer in interviewing influencers as a way of exposing new users to Steemit and creating content that is interesting to Steemit users and non-Steemit users alike.
@mynameisbrian recently commented and told me that I should have earned more for yesterday's post. I appreciate his concern, but I'm genuinely happy that the view numbers were high! I'll continue to try to provide more content that people outside Steemit find interesting!
My conclusion from reading this blog post is that when @ned talks about the steemit "attention economy", he is lying about the economy part being related to attention

I've never seen 510 eyeballs before! The engagement guild idea that I proposed would scoop up that post, sending it to the moon!

I think a 'trending by vote' and a 'trending by view count' should be options in addition to the current trending tab. Always enjoys your post, keep up the good fight

I think that's an awesome idea! And I appreciate your support.
I think there's a high demand to see the highest earning posts, but it'd be interesting to see what posts are getting the most sets of eyes on them as well.

I caught wind of a future feature that would have stars, human-only, but i am not sure if/when it's rolling out.

I upvoted your post late. I thought it was a great post and agree with @mynameisbrian.
As far as view counters go - the accuracy of them has been questioned by many users, so I'm not sure if it's the best way to judge views. That being said, the fact that you have so much more than other posts on Steemit is a good indicator that you very likely are reaching far more people. So, congratulations to you on that.
The part that I find disturbing is the one post with 36 views and five total comments being number three on the trending list after a full day. I get that stake-weighted voting is how trending is presented, but I don't think it's a very effective indicator of "popularity" and probably shouldn't be the focus for the Steemit.com landing page. This happens far too often, and with the view counter now on the pages, it can really affect reader perceptions about what's happening on the platform. We should find a better way to display the popular content on Steemit and not just have the one statistical category for the home page.

Some great, thoughtful points here. Thanks, David.
I think a big reason why my post received external views (this is an assumption), is because it capitalized on a topic that was trending earlier this week. In the two Tweets I put out, I used Genie's Twitter username, as well as John's. Thousands of people would've been searching for this topic on Monday/Tuesday; therefore, several of those individuals probably landed on my story.
Hopefully this post of mine didn't come across as whining, because honestly, I'm grateful for any and every upvote I get. I simply find it interesting that content, which may in fact be bringing more readers to Steemit, is potentially getting buried (or, at least, is more difficult to discover than other posts).
The truth is, I'm thrilled that the view count on that story is nearing 600 :)
