Kukis militants operate in India's northeast mainly in Manipur. They are an ethnic minority who are predominantly Christian. They may not want to actually fight for complete independence from India, but they certainly do want some kind of an autonomy for themselves.

The major stumbling block in their path towards autonomy is, the state government of Manipur. When we say, Manipur, we are mostly talking about Meitei community, who control the state government. Under the present arrangement, the Meitei Hindus have an unfair advantage in Manipur. They can make the police shoot rubber bullets on one protester and live bullets on another depending on their communal feelings of love and hate. It's not just about the discrimination in allocation of developmental funds alone.

In the past, a political leader from mainland once remarked in a private conversation that the Kukis, should they want, they can join their Mizo brothers. That is to say, the Kuki areas of Manipur could go to Mizoram (another state in northeast India). Mizos and Kukis, for those who don't know, have a shared ancestry. They both are Christian communities. The Meiteis, on the other hand, are fiercely Hindu – the rise and rise of the Hindu supremacists (both in Manipur and all over India) has not been without a cause of concern for others.

Recently, in the intervening night of June 10 and 11, 2018, two Kuki insurgents have been apprehended while the third one was shot dead. It took place under Jiribam Police station, Manipur. One M16 rifle, one pistol and one hand grenade were recovered from their possession.

A lost tribe of Israel?

Some Kuki tribesmen have gone to Israel after their conversion ceremony. They even have joined the IDF. All because of a theory that Kukis are a lost tribe of Israel. Question is, can a Mongoloid ethnic people be a descendant of a non-Mongoloid ethnic people? I remember reading a statement made by one Israeli politician that called those Kukis who came to Israel as economic opportunists.

Conclusion

Although they live in poverty, Kuki people are absolutely amazing to hang out with. They don't practice the dreadful caste of India that is synonymous with the Meitei Hindus as "Mengba-Sengba".
