Well here are the facts about what went down:
A person who served his nation, served his nation again in a church of all places.
Others who were trained in the use of weapons were prepared to take action if necessary and they did so professionally.
Not "freaking out" and possibly putting anyone else in harms way, while a patriot who assessed the situation in a matter of a second took appropriate action to defend the lives of innocent people.
While some of the "media" sources out there try to put a spin on things and many fall victim to the propaganda machine of political agendas, there are those who say it as it is, at least in this case.
So, to all those who have heard any of the BS out there and who have not heard the truth about what exactly happened that day in a church, when a sick criminal wanted to go on an all out killing spree, picking a place in which the coward obviously planned in advance, as he obviously thought that law abiding citizens would most likely be unarmed there.
Luckily, some people are ready for such situations and have the appropriate equipment to ensure they can defend themselves and those around them.
The rest I leave to you imagination as to what would have happened if these people were not able to adequately defend themselves against a sick maniac.
I rest my case.
Cheers.
Amen @jackmiller! Frankly surprising to read from an Australian, given my memory of quite an exchange with two Aussies from Perth over, "what is it with you Americans and guns?"
But great to know they didn't speak for all of you! 👍

Extremists on both sides of the specter are very loud and too many sheep can't hear the voice of reason over the yelling and screaming.
Hence we (don't) have what we (should) have.
Cheers.

As an Australian whose views I respect @jackmiller, I would be interested to know what you would consider an extremist view on the side of those of us Americans who believe in their Second Amendment right to own guns.
We live in a time, from this man's perspective anyway, when it is not easy to discern truth from fiction to outright intentional deception ... That said, we also live in this fascinating time in man's history where you and I can communicate with each other real time half around the world away from each other. On a blockchain specifically designed for that purpose ...
P.S. Are you and your loved ones threatened by these historic wildfires?

Simple enough:
Anyone who wishes that everyone be allowed to posses firearms is = extremist.
Logic needs to prevail. Such as laws that ensure that law abiding citizens be allowed to own firearms. That those who own firearms are fit for the responsibilities that come with owning firearms (namely: sane). That those who want to own firearms are educated in the theory and practical lessons, tested in this knowledge prior to being granted a license (same as a driving license as one example).
In my personal opinion, if a person refuses to accept these types of laws, then that person is being irrational and as such depending on their actions could be an extremist.
i.e. forcing their irrational opinions upon others.
Same applies for those irrational people who are on the other side of the fence. Among whom are obviously a number of politicians who are granted a lot of space in the mainstream media.
Logic and rationality need to apply to everything out there, especially when it concerns the handling of and ownership of anything that definitely requires it.
Hope that this is a clear enough definition of what I consider to be "extreme".
on your other question:
No, my family is not in the danger zone and there is no fear of there being any danger.
Appreciate you asking. The worst that my loved ones have to experience is smoke in the air and cleaning up the yard from what the wind carries in.

On the surface, I agree with this @jackmiller ...
... as in a reasonable world, that would represent a position from which "reasonable" people could have a discussion and, with good intentions, arrive at a consensus. Based upon the perception that we were dealing with others from a base of the character and integrity required, even if there was initial disagreement.
Do we live in such a world?
Sadly, not from my view. Inherent in what you suggest is the need for a system for registering everyone who owns a firearm of any sort. Requiring trust in the all powerful State to use it for its stated purpose and never anything more. Right ...
I could write a lot more, but I am sure you get the general idea of where I stand on this issue. I am in the minority though and shrinking at that, so I imagine we'll all find out soon enough how this plays over the next few years. Only God knows what the final outcome would be, if the American people are ever successfully disarmed.
One man's ($0.02) opinion ...
Glad to learn your family is not personally threatened. I lost my father in a wildfire years ago, so it is a topic of more than passing interest to me ...

Sorry for the loss. May he RIP.
& yes, I understand your point of view fully.
To what extent should a government control things?
However, we do vote our governments in and one of the biggest problems with that is a lack of information, a lack of integrity among the people in the media branches and most of all the fact that the people "running for a position" are willing to bend over backwards most often than not to get the vote, rather than do what is right, no questions asked.
If you have noticed, the bulk of the issues are arising since "career politicians" started taking over in politics.
Before this, we used to choose people who have proven their qualities and abilities through the course of their life in the fields that they were active in. Now we have almost nothing but those who have never earned a dollar that didn't come out of a tax payers pocket!
That says more about the problems than anything else.

I'll give you another "Amen!" on that @jackmiller. You are "talking" with someone who was actively involved in politics, at the grassroots level, for 6 years in the late 1980s / early 1990s - a District Leader over 42 precincts. I left when Bill Clinton was elected as the first "progressive" (how do our philosophical adversaries manage to "make off" with words like this?) President of the United States.
When asked by family and friends "Why?" I replied that too much of what had unfolded (including a historic defeat all the way "down the line" across much of the country, including the remarkable man I wrote about in my Liberty: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave - Col. Leo Thorsness) reminded me of what I had read many years before in the classic history of Adolf Hitler - The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. It created a lifetime memory to read the details of how the German people freely elected to power a monster ...
My point? Simply that "we the people" still have the power to change the course of our countries. But ... We do not. Lots to be said after that, as to why the famous Benjamin Franklin answered a question about what form of government the Constitutional Convention had created with, "A Republic, if you can keep it!" ...
Bottom line (one man's opinion ...): We have the government we deserve ... As a Christian, I can turn a political "conversation" into a spiritual one quite easily ...
P.S. A somewhat related side note: In this fascinating "world" of our Steem blockchain, I have had a number of interactions with people in Venezuela. Remarkable to me, as a clear example of what I have written above, is that we Americans are actively engaged in electing our next President, when a number of them espouse the same basic ideas that led Venezuela to where it is today ... Key question: Are the Venezuelan people allowed to own guns?

Self defence is a human right.
The tools needed for self defence should by default be a right too, otherwise people are literally 'lambs for the slaughter'.
Again, a logical equation.
