Underground houses in Matmata, Tunisia

The ancient man lived in the caves to escape the high temperature. But Matmata is a Tunisian city belonging to the Berber or Amazigh people - an indigenous form in Africa who lived in the north. The Berbers built their homes in Matmata, south of Tunisia, underground. The Berbers did not build their houses in the mountains but dug deep into the ground on a large area to make their private homes underground.

Most of the Tunisian cities are located on a layer of sandstone, which is soft and can be easily excavated with simple tools, but at the same time can be used to build centuries-old houses, evidence that the Berbers were building their homes during this sandstone for thousands of years.
The Matamata Plateau is located near the land road that links Libya and Tunisia. This area has been plentiful for many colonists throughout the ages, forcing the Berbers to defend their homeland and when they were retreating, the plateau was their refuge. After the independence of the Arab countries, the Berbers felt secure and encouraged them to build and expand the villages in this region. Now this area is considered one of the most important tourist destinations in Tunisia and it was one of the shooting sites in the film Star Wars, specifically at Sidi Drees Hotel.

Some may wonder how they can breathe in underground homes ?? Of course, these houses do not have industrial ventilation holes as we see them in the movies, but every house has an open courtyard that goes through the air to the rest of the house. It is also the place where family gather and talk in the house.

These days, the people of Matmata are working on hosting tourists in their homes as a kind of work and increasing income since the village is small and has barely one hotel. The beauty of these houses is that their style is very similar as the doors of the houses are all painted in blue and the furniture is very simple with lots of kelim and handicrafts.






كان الانسان قديمًا يعيش في الكهوف للهروب من درجة الحرارة المرتفع. لكن مطماطة مدينة تونسية تنتمي إلى الشعب البربري أو الأمازيغ –شكال أصليين في أفريقيا كانوا يعيشون في الشمال-. بنا البربر بيوتهم في مطماطة جنوب تونس تحت الأرض. لم يقم البربر ببناء بيوتهم ف الجبال بل قاموا بالحفر عميقًا في الأرض على مساحة واسعة لصناعة منازلهم الخاصة تحت الأرض.
وتقع معظم المدن التونسية على طبقة من الحجر الرملي الذي هو لين مما يمكن الحفر خلاله بسهولة بأدوات بسيطة لكنها في نفس الوقت يمكن استخدامها في بناء المنازل التي تصمد لقرون والدليل على ذك أن البربر كانوا يبنون منازلهم خلال هذا الحجر الرملي لآلاف السنين.
تقع هضبة مطماطة حيث يوجد هذا النوع من المساكن بالقرب من الطريق البري الذي يربط بين ليبيا وتونس وقد كانت هذه المنطقة مطمع للكثير من المستعمرين عبر العصور مما اضطر البربر إلى الدفاع عن موطنهم وحين كانوا يتراجعون كانت الهضبة هي الملجأ لهم. وبعد استقلال الدول العربية شعر البربر بالأمان مما دفهم لبناء القري وتوسيعها في هذه المنطقة. والآن هذه المنطقة تعتبر من أهم الأماكن السياحية التونسية كما أنها كانت أحد مواقع التصوير في فيلم حرب النجوم بالتحديد في فندق سيدي دريس.

قد يتساءل البعض كيف يمكن التنفس في منازل تحت الأرض؟؟ بالطبع هذه المنازل لا تحتوي على فتحات تهوية صناعية كما نراها في الأفلام لكن كل منزل يحتوي على فناء مفتوح يدخل عن طريق الهواء إلى باقي المنزل. كما أنه أيضًا يعتبر المكان الذذي تتجمع فيه العائلة وتحدث فيه اللقاءات داخل المنزل.

يعمل أهالي مطماطة هذه الأيام على استضافة السائحين في منازلهم كنوع من العمل وزيادة الدخل بما أن القرية صغيرة وتحتوي على فندق واحد بالكاد. الجميل في هذه المنازل أن طرازها يعتبر متشابه إلى حد كبير حيث أن أبواب المنازل جميعها مطلية باللون الأزرق كما أن الأثاث غاية في البساطة مع الكثير من الكليم والمصنوعات اليدوية.
