When I started the miner it got all the way up to 92% then I got a wall of red text that read unknown hardfork exception, hummmm...

    Yep the tutorial is already outdated, you have to download the latest version of the miner:
    https://github.com/btscube/steem/releases/download/0.13.0-rc3/steem-win-13-0rc3.zip
