Twitter has temporarily restricted the number of tweets users can see in a day, in a move that has been attributed to Elon Musk. The tech billionaire, who is in the process of buying the social media platform, said the limits were necessary to address “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation”.
Unverified accounts are now limited to reading 1,000 posts a day, while new unverified accounts are capped at 500. Accounts with “verified” status are currently limited to 10,000 posts a day.
The limits were announced by Musk in a tweet on Friday, in which he said that Twitter was “getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users”. He did not explain what was meant by system manipulation in this context.
The move has been met with mixed reactions. Some users have welcomed the limits, saying that they will help to protect users’ privacy and prevent the spread of misinformation. Others have criticized the limits, saying that they are an unnecessary restriction on free speech.
It is unclear how long the limits will be in place. Musk has said that they are a “temporary emergency measure” and that he is working to develop a more permanent solution.
