There's now majority support for same-sex civil unions in Ukraine. And a Ukrainian legislator has introduced a bill to legalize them. This has taken on special significance during the war as civil unions would allow partners of gay soldiers to be informed if the soldier is injured, killed, or captured.
While there is still a long way to go for LGBT rights and acceptance in Ukraine, there has been tremendous progress. Over the last decade support for civil unions increased significantly. And pride marches continue to gain in popularity.
If Ukraine eventually intends to join the EU, it will also need to recognize same-sex marriages between foreigners and Ukrainians performed abroad. Such marriages when involving Ukrainians are currently not recognized in the country.
