#Ulog 3 - Another visit to the hospital

It's been more than two weeks since my wife and I last visited the hospital. That was for an endoscopy procedure. And now we are back once again to know the result of the biopsy procedure.

To make everything clear, let me give a a few details on what happens during an endoscopy procedure. In this procedure, the gastroenterologist (doctor for the digestive system) will put the patient to sleep. He or she will then insert a tube with a camera through the mouth to check the condition of the esophagus and stomach of the patient.

For several months now, my wife has been experiencing some periods of excruciating pain or burning sensation in her stomach. She underwent an ultrasound test if there was anything wrong with her stomach. It turned out negative. Her doctor then suggested she undergo endoscopy to see if there is anything in her stomach that causes the pain.

As I explained in one of my entry, the procedure took place in July 12. During the procedure, the doctor was able to see a polyp and an erosion. He then removed these to have them checked (biopsy). He told us to return a week later for the result of the biopsy.

A week later, our city was devastated by a heavy downpour that lasted for a few days. The flood lasted even longer, over two weeks to be exact. And the hospital was only accessible to big vehicles. So we had no choice but to wait for the floodwater to subside.

Yesterday, we finally had the chance to return to the hospital for the result. After waiting for almost 2 hours, we could then see the doctor. The result, it turned out benign! Finally, it was a relief to learn that we had nothing to worry about at all.

Still, it does not explain the cause of her stomach pains. This is what the doctors call "functional problem". This means that it cannot be seen but can be felt by the patient. Unlike an "organic problem" which can be seen and felt by the patient, a functional problem is harder to treat. The good thing is, it is still treatable.

The doctor prescribed a medicine that will last for almost for a month. I just hope that this medication will work this time.
