Home economics is a field of study that concerns various aspects of our day to day activities. It has many aspects including food and nutrition, clothing and textile, family relationship, consumer education and many others. There are various job opportunities in the field of study, namely; interior and exterior decoration, catering services, dietitian, school matron, fashion designer and so on.
In colleges of education offering Home Economics as a course all over Nigeria, the RESIDENCE is an important aspect student studying home economics undergoes before leaving school. Every session, one of the courses final year student offer is MANAGEMENT RESIDENCE AND HOUSEHOLD BUDGET. Home economics residence is a practical class where the theoretical explanations about management in family living is experimented and people are taught how to relate with others while considering individual differences in relations to choice of food, mode of communication and coping strategies of living as a family unit which prepares one to be a successful home maker.
A total of 84 students of Home Economics department in Adeyemi College of education were grouped into 12 groups with each groups consisting of 7 members and each family choose their choice of family units whether a nuclear family or an extended family or a polygamous family. A private residence has been used over the years for the practical exercise and situated within the college premises at the school staff quarters.
The home economics residence is located opposite Adeyemi Water Co-operation along the College’s second gate. Each group were expected to live at the residence for a week and perform family day- to- day activities together in order to foster peace and encourage cordials which helps to make a good and successful home maker. The seven members in my group include
Oladimeji Adenike Salewa
Oladoye Dorcas Oladoyin
Olaseni Grace Oluwaseun
Oloruntele Deborah
Oluwagbemileke Feranmi
Adeyemi Opeyemi
Titilayo Ruth
Time of arrival to the residence was 4pm on Saturday evening by my group and we assembled to get the equipment and utensils needed for the one week practical exercise. Dr Akintoye checked us in, gave us a list of everything available in the house for proper documentation and orientation as to how to abide to our time plan, menu plan and ensuring co-operation among family members not only because of supervision by other lecturers but also to develop us in understanding individual differences.
We got to our various rooms, handpicked by member of the family and got to work. I shared a room with Oladimeji Nike and from there a genuine relationship developed. Chores were shared and I was in charge of mopping the floor and cleaning of louver blades while others were either fetching water, cooking or arranging items. We got together for dinner at 7pm. Prayer was said and we had the appetizer served first and then the main meal and desserts. We held a meeting in anticipation of activities of other days and each section head was reminded of their tasks to be carried out the following day. I went to bed at 10pm alongside my roommate and slept.
Alarm was rung at 5am for morning devotion Sunday morning; we sang, prayed and shared benedictions. Everyone went to do their duties and pray for church. We left for church at 8am and got back home 2pm, immediately after church, everyone started working, some were cooking, whiles others were getting water. We had lunch and later went to visit our neighbor a visit. We visited Mrs Olugbamigbe and her family, chatted with her, asked her questions that were unclear to us and seek advice. Another visit was paid to Mrs Ogunmosin and her family and we were welcomed to the neighborhood.
Evening time, our small chops were ready along with the drinks and fruit juices. Dinner was prepared and we ate at 7pm.
Mrs Olugbamigbe came to supervise us while eating and she met us with our dinner set with food dished in various set (appetizer, main meal &dessert). She graded us and gave us more knowledge into our choice of desserts. We learnt that we could dice banana into thin slices and insert into cake pudding before baking. The sweetness of the banana would be mixed with the cake pudding and could be used as dessert.
As usual, we held another meeting after dinner, prayed and headed for bed to rest. It was fun filled and I learnt a new dish that could be used as a dessert.
