My Daughter's 16th Birthday

One day like today, 16 years ago, in Athens, Oh, my first daughter, Vivian, was born. It has been a long journey from the cold Midwest to the hot arid coast of Cumaná.

A journey of joys and sadness, of triumphs and failures. Today, I want to celebrate joy and triumph. I want to thank you, dear Vivian, for your childhood. At this juncture of your life, when parents become a nuisance, the censors of all that looks attractive and exciting for you, and distance and silence replace the old good chats, games and joined projects, I want to tell you that I love you and treasure every day of your life and every moment we've spent together.

Un viaje de alegrías y tristezas, de triunfos y fracasos. Hoy, quiero celebrar la alegría y el triunfo. Quiero agradecerte, querida Vivian, por tu niñez. En esta encrucijada de tu vida, cuando los padres son un fastidio, prohibiendo todo lo que te parece atractivo y emocionante, y la distancia y el silencio sustituye las viejas pláticas, los juegos y los proyecto conjuntos, quiero decirte que te amo y atesoro cada día de tu vida y cada momento que hemos pasado juntos.

And then, Anna came to our lives and you became the big sister, the best ever was.

Y luego Anna llegó a nuestras vidas y te convertiste en la hermana mayor, la mejor.

But then the biggest change came. We had to return to Venezuela and by 2008 it was a very different country from the one I had left. For some time you did not care and saw the good things in everything.

Pero vino el mayor cambio. Tuvimos que regresar a Venezuela y para el 2008 ya era un país muy diferente al que habíamos dejado atrás. Por un tiempo no te importó y veías lo bueno en todo.

You were so mature and responsible. The perfect child. You understood changes in ways we were not able to. Your big heart was your North Star.

Eras tan madura y responsable. La niña perfecta. Entendías los cambios en formas que nosotros no éramos capaces de hacerlo. Tu gran corazón era tu estrella del norte.

Despite the bad weather, you were always able to keep smiling. A smelly swamp would be a paradise for adventures.

A pesar del mal tiempo, siempre te las arreglabas para sonreír. Un manglar apestoso podías convertirlo en un paraíso de aventuras.

Next thing you know, growing starts happening faster and faster

When circumstances allowed we were able to share a movie or two

Cuando las circunstancias lo permitían podíamos compartir una que otra película.

A lot of changes start to happen, from your drawings, to your hair :) But that was expected and you were still my girl, only bigger and more beautiful.

Muchos cambios empiezan a darse, desde tus dibujos hasta tu pelo :) Pero eso era de esperarse y tú seguías siendo mi niña, solo más grande y más hermosa.

Deep down you have not changed a bit. You are still good at sports, can be the best big sister whenever you want and can give the most radiant smile capable of melting any heart.

En el fondo no has cambiado nada. Sigues siendo buena en los deportes, puedes ser la mejor hermana mayor cuando te lo propones y puedes dar la sonrisa más radiante, capaz de derretir cualquier corazón.
